Even a favorite paddle can start to feel like it is not hitting the way it used to. Paddles have a lifespan, and performance drops little by little. This article covers why paddles degrade, the signs it is time to replace one, and how to use yours so it lasts.

Why paddles have a lifespan

Most paddles are built with a honeycomb core sandwiched between thin face materials. Degradation runs along three main paths: the honeycomb core fatigues under repeated impact, losing pop and developing dead spots; the face material separates from the core, known as delamination; and the face or edge takes physical damage. Even when nothing looks different, the feel and the pop change as the inside softens. For the differences that come from core construction, seepaddle core material comparison.

Signs it is time to replace

When you notice changes like the following, it is time to think about a replacement. If several apply, replacing it is the way to go.

Sign Symptom
Loss of pop The ball does not travel as far on the same swing. Deep balls get harder to reach
Dead spots One part of the face feels dull, and the sound and the pop change
Cracks or peeling on the surface Cracks or lifting appear in the face material
A change in sound The sound of contact changes. A softened core goes dull, while delamination gives a hollow rattle or a loose clatter
Damaged edge guard (If the paddle has one) the guard around the rim cracks, letting impact reach the inside more easily

Dead spots in particular are a sign the core has degraded. If you notice the feel changing depending on where you hit on the face, pay attention.

Rough lifespans by how often you play

Lifespan varies widely with how you play, so there is no single answer, but here are rough guides. Treat them as a reference and go by the changes you feel when you hit.

  • Playing hard several times a week: Loss of pop often becomes noticeable in about one to two years
  • Playing around once a week: Often lasts several years
  • Competitive players who hit hard: Sometimes replaced in under a year

At the same frequency, lifespan gets shorter still when factors pile up, such as hitting hard often, storing the paddle in heat, or playing mainly outdoors.

How to make a paddle last

使用後のピックルボールパドルを布で手入れする様子

You cannot stop degradation completely, but you can slow it down. The three points are not leaving the paddle in a hot car, wiping it down after play and keeping it in a case, and not banging it against hard objects. The specific steps for care and storage are covered inThe Complete Guide to Paddle Maintenance, so see that article for those. Here we will stay with how to decide on a replacement.

What to look for when you replace

Replacing a paddle is also a good chance to review your playing style. Whatever you have felt about your current one, whether it is too heavy or too light, too lively or too dead, put it into your next choice. For how to think about weight and balance, seeheavy paddle vs. light paddle, and for choosing overall, seethe complete paddle-choosing guideis a good reference.

Summary

A paddle loses performance little by little as the core softens, and a loss of pop or dead spots are the signs it is time to replace. Lifespan depends on how you use it, but keeping it out of heat and protected in a case makes it last. When you notice the feel changing, treat it as the moment to pick your next one. For specific models, seePaddle Recommendation Guideis also worth a look.

FAQ

Q1: How long does a paddle last?

A1: It depends heavily on how you use it. Roughly 1 to 2 years for someone who plays hard several times a week, and several years at about once a week. Competitive players who hit hard often replace a paddle in under a year.

Q2: If it still looks fine, can I keep using it?

A2: Even when the outside looks undamaged, the core inside breaks down. Judge by changes in feel, such as reduced pop or dead spots, rather than by appearance.

Q3: What is a dead spot?

A3: It is when one part of the face feels dull on contact. It signals that the core has deteriorated, and the sound and the flight of the ball change in that spot only.

Q4: Is there a way to make a paddle last longer?

A4: Keep it out of hot places, wipe it down after play and store it in a case, and avoid knocking it against hard objects. Damage to the edge guard shortens its life.

Q5: What happens if I keep using a paddle that has lost its pop?

A5: Deep shots stop reaching, and balls hit with your usual swing fall short, so errors pile up. It affects the quality of your play, so consider replacing the paddle once you notice a change.
