How the pickleball environment in Shizuoka Prefecture has changed

Against the backdrop of its east-west-elongated geography, pickleball in Shizuoka Prefecture is spreading little by little in the Hamamatsu-Lake Hamana area, Shizuoka City, Fujieda, the eastern Numazu-Mishima area, and Atami in Izu. Lake Hamana has 4 dedicated outdoor courts that are USA Pickleball-certified, and at fitness facilities in the west you can rent indoor courts to play—the options have been increasing.

This article introduces where you can play in Shizuoka and how to find courts, narrowed to facilities whose existence we could confirm from sources.

They were renovated to asphalt courts in spring 2026, so you can play in an environment that meets the official standard. Atami Pickleball Club (Atami City)

Atami Pickleball Clubis a club that holds regular practices using public facilities like Minami-Atami Marine Hall. Held mainly on Monday and Thursday evenings, participation is around 500–600 yen as a guide. It suits those who want to get moving in the Izu-Atami area.

The current state of court development in Shizuoka and how to find courts

Shizuoka Prefecture has limited dedicated and permanent courts that anyone can rent, and the central options are Lake Hamana's certified courts and two fitness locations in the west. Beyond those, the mainstream is local circles renting public gymnasiums by the day of the week in Kikugawa, Shimizu (Shizuoka City), Kakegawa, Numazu, and elsewhere.

Venues and schedules change by circle, and it's not uncommon for the venue name to be given by inquiry only. To find courts reliably, we recommend filtering by "Shizuoka" on a nationwide facility directory service and checking the latest information on facilities and circles. Since dedicated facilities are increasing in neighboring Aichi Prefecture, in border areas checkingfacility information for Aichi Prefectureas well widens your options.

What Is Pickleball? For First-Timers

Pickleball is a racket sport played with a court smaller than a tennis court and a perforated plastic ball. With simple rules and rallies that keep going, it's enjoyable regardless of athletic background or age, and the number of players is growing worldwide.

The only gear you really need is a paddle and a ball, and many facilities and circles lend out equipment. An easy way to start is to hit some balls at a trial session or rental court first, then get your own paddle once you feel it's fun. In Shizuoka Prefecture too, facilities and circles that welcome beginners are increasing little by little.

3 steps to start pickleball in Shizuoka

1. Learn the Rules and Your Own Level

Getting a grasp of the official rules and where you currently stand first will keep you from hesitating when choosing a facility or circle. For a rough gauge of your skill level, checkthe guide to skill ratings (2.0–5.0).

② Try hitting at a certified court or indoor facility

Next, actually hit some balls at Lake Hamana's certified courts or an indoor facility in the west. At a place that lends equipment, you can try it empty-handed. Tennis players shouldthe differences from tenniswill make it go smoothly.

3. Try Entering a Tournament

Once you're used to it, taking on a tournament will speed up your improvement. For how to pick a tournament even beginners can enter, refer tothe beginner's tournament guide.

Circles and regular practice sessions within the prefecture

There are circles using public gymnasiums as venues across the prefecture.

  • Shizuoka Pickles (Shimizu Ward, Shizuoka City / Shimizu Elementary, Yui Gymnasium) — Saturday or Sunday mornings, 300 yen participation.
  • Mishima Pickles (Mishima City / Shizuoka Prefecture Health and Welfare Exchange Plaza) — every Sunday from 17:30, 500 yen participation, paddle lending available.

  • Shizuoka Toubu Pickleball (Mishima Citizens' Gymnasium and others) — a separate group from Mishima Pickles, holding sessions irregularly in the east.
  • Circles within the prefecture use public and school gymnasiums as venues, and since many groups lend out equipment, you can join empty-handed. You can find them via each group's social media and Pickleball Navi.
  • In the Yaizu-Fujieda area, circles that use multiple school and public gymnasiums on rotating days of the week are active.
  • Trial sessions are also held in the east, such as Fuji and Numazu, and since many groups lend out equipment, you can join empty-handed.
  • There are circles in each of the Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, and eastern areas, so you can choose and join a group close to where you live. Since venues often rotate by day of the week, checking the event date in advance for your first time is reassuring.

Please check event dates and participation fees in each group's announcements.
