How has Kanagawa Prefecture's pickleball environment changed?

Kanagawa's pickleball has spread out, centered on large facilities in Yokohama, into schools in Kawasaki and club activities in the Shonan area. There are facilities with courts on the scale of 14 courts, as well as venues that make use of tennis and futsal facilities, and thanks to their location adjacent to Tokyo, many players from within the metropolis visit as well.

In this article, we narrow it down to facilities whose real existence could be confirmed by sources, and introduce where you can play in Kanagawa and how to find a place.

Main facilities where you can play in Kanagawa Prefecture [At a glance]

We've organized the venues in the Yokohama, Kawasaki, and Shonan areas in a list. For facilities you're interested in, please check them alongside the explanations in the second half.

Main facilities in the Yokohama area

KPI PARK Yokohama / Toyoda District Center (Sakae Ward)

KPI PARK Yokohamais an outdoor dedicated pickleball facility with courts on the scale of 14 courts, among the largest in the prefecture. With its many courts, it is an environment that readily accommodates large-group practice, events, and tournament-format play.Toyoda District Center in Sakae Ward, Yokohama Cityholds beginner practice sessions on an irregular basis, using a public facility's gymnasium as the venue, so you can casually try playing indoors.

Futsal Club Yokohama (Tsuzuki Ward)

Futsal Club Yokohamais a pickleball rental court that makes use of an indoor court. A guide price is 2,200 yen per court per hour, and since you can book by the hour, it's convenient when you want to secure a court among friends.

Venues in the Kawasaki and Shonan areas

Beyond Yokohama, schools and club activities are also spreading.

Noah Kawasaki Miyamaedaira School (Miyamae Ward, Kawasaki City)

Noah Kawasaki Miyamaedaira Schoolis a school that offers pickleball lessons on an air-conditioned indoor court. It has free rentals of rackets and shoes, so you can attend empty-handed. It suits people who want to learn from the basics.

Shonan Pickleball Association (Kamakura, Zushi)

Shonan Pickleball Associationis a club that regularly rents gymnasiums and public facilities in the Kamakura, Zushi, and Fujisawa areas for its activities. At Zushi Arena it sometimes secures up to 8 courts, making it the core of the most organized activity in the Shonan area.

The current state of court development in Kanagawa and how to find a place

While Kanagawa's venues are concentrated in Yokohama, circle activities that rent gymnasiums support everyday play in the Kawasaki, Shonan, and central-prefecture areas. Since venues and schedules change by group, the surest approach is to check the latest information put out by the circle in the area you want to join.

Because it is adjacent to Tokyo, quite a few players are active while going back and forth with facilities within the metropolis. To search reliably, we recommend filtering by "Kanagawa" on a nationwide facility directory service and checking the latest information on facilities and circles.

What Is Pickleball? For First-Timers

Pickleball is a racket sport played with a court smaller than a tennis court and a perforated plastic ball. With simple rules and rallies that keep going, it's enjoyable regardless of athletic background or age, and the number of players is growing worldwide.

The equipment you need is about a paddle and a ball, and many facilities and circles lend out gear. An easy way to start is to first hit at a trial session or a rental court, and if you find it fun, prepare your own paddle. In Kanagawa Prefecture too, facilities and circles that welcome beginners are increasing.

Three steps to start pickleball in Kanagawa

1. Learn the Rules and Your Own Level

Getting a grasp of the official rules and where you currently stand first will keep you from hesitating when choosing a facility or circle. For a rough gauge of your skill level, checkthe guide to skill ratings (2.0–5.0).

② Try hitting at a large facility or school

Next, actually try hitting at a facility in Yokohama or a school in Kawasaki. At places that lend out equipment, you can try empty-handed. Those with tennis experience canthe differences from tenniswill make it go smoothly.

3. Try Entering a Tournament

Once you're used to it, taking on a tournament will speed up your improvement. For how to pick a tournament even beginners can enter, refer tothe beginner's tournament guide.
