Once your pickleball serve gets past simply going in, it turns into a weapon for taking control of the point. Push the opponent back with a deep drive, or float it soft to pull them out of shape — once you can hit serves on purpose, everything that follows gets easier. This article sets out the main serve types, the spin on them and where each one works.

  • Learn the main serve types and what each one does

  • See the order to work in to turn the serve into a weapon

The serving rules to get straight first

Check the foundation before the types. The standard pickleball serve (the volley serve) is hit underhand: contact below the navel (the waist), the paddle head below the wrist, swinging from low to high into the diagonal service court. The drop serve, where you let the ball bounce and hit it off the bounce, is also allowed, and because it is free of the restrictions on contact height and swing path, it leaves far more freedom in your form. For where the fault lines sit in detail, seePickleball serve rulesas you confirm.

The main types of serve

Four serves come up most often. Start with the table for the overall picture.

Type Features Aim
Drive serve A fast, deep, flat serve Pushes the opponent back and draws a weak return
Soft (high) serve Floats high and slow Breaks the opponent's rhythm and buys time
Topspin serve Carries topspin and kicks up off the bounce Throws off the contact point on the return
Drop serve Bounced once, then hit Free of the restrictions on the motion, so faults are rare. Good for beginners

Of these, the drive, soft and topspin serves differ in trajectory and spin, while the drop serve differs in how it is struck — you let it bounce first. The axes are different, so combinations work too: a drop serve with topspin, for instance.

What each serve does and where to use it

Drive serve

A serve that pushes the opponent back with pace and depth. Land it deep and they have to handle it near the baseline, which takes away the time to move in. The more speed you chase, though, the higher the risk of going long or into the net, so it has to stay under control.

Soft (high) serve

A serve that climbs high and drops slowly. It works when you want to break the rhythm of an opponent used to fast exchanges. The long hang time also gives you room to get set for the next ball. A ball that is only high and short invites a big return, though, so depth is the condition.

Topspin serve

A serve carrying topspin so it pushes on after the bounce. It moves the opponent's contact point back and makes returns pop up. Putting spin on it means following the rules covered below.

Drop serve

Here you let the ball bounce and hit it off the bounce. It is free of the contact-height and swing restrictions on the standard serve, so faults are rare. You cannot put spin on the ball by rolling it out of your hand, though: you drop it naturally and hit. Beginners struggling to land the serve should start here.

The rules on applying spin

The line here is drawn clearly. Under the current rules, spin created by the paddle is allowed, while imparting spin with the fingers or the hand at the moment of release is banned. When you go for topspin or slice, remember that the spin has to come from the swing. For the rules as a whole, seethe complete guide to pickleballis also worth a look.

The order to learn the serves in

3つの目標地点を狙ってサーブを打ち分ける選手

Going straight for pace or spin costs you consistency. Building it up in this order is the short route.

  • First, build the repeatability to land the same swing in the area you are aiming at
  • Next, make the depth consistent, the length that pushes the opponent back
  • Last, add the variations: the drive, the topspin and the rest

For building a stable foundation, seePractice methods to stabilize your serveexplains it in detail.

Summary

Build the serve on four types — drive, soft, topspin and drop — and pick between them by what you want, and the point that follows gets easier. Spin comes from the swing as a rule, and the order to sharpen is repeatability, then depth, then variation. If the fault lines worry you,the faults players trip over mostis worth checking too.

FAQ

Q1: Which serve should a beginner learn first?

A1: The drop serve. You let the ball bounce and hit it, so the form is simple and the success rate comes up quickly. Widen out to the drive and the rest once you are comfortable.

Q2: Is spin allowed on the serve?

A2: Spin generated by the paddle swing is allowed. Imparting spin with the fingers or the hand at the moment of release is banned. The spin has to come from the swing.

Q3: Which is more effective, a fast serve or a deep one?

A3: Depth works more reliably. Pace brings more errors, so land it deep to push the opponent back first and add speed when you have room.

Q4: Does the drop serve put me at a disadvantage?

A4: No. It is consistent, and depth and spin can be worked in. Pros use it when the situation calls for it — it is a legal serve.

Q5: My serve sits up and gets attacked. What should I do?

A5: Keep contact below the waist and make the low-to-high swing the same every time. Build the repeatability to land the same swing in the target area first, and the ball stops sitting up.
