Pickleball and padel come up together as the new names in racket sports. Both get introduced as “easier than tennis”, so they are easy to mix up, but the courts, the balls and how readily you can start in Japan are all quite different. This article lines the two up across seven points, then closes with which one to start with, by type of player.

Pickleball and padel compared across seven points at a glance

Start with the table for the overall picture. The reasons behind each line come in the chapters that follow.

Comparison item Pickleball Padel
Court size 13.41m×6.10m (nearly the same as badminton) 20m×10m
Walls Open court, no walls Enclosed on four sides by glass and mesh
Gear Perforated plastic ball and a flat paddle Low-pressure rubber ball and a moulded racket with holes
Scoring method Only the serving side scores (first to 11, win by 2) Tennis style (15-30-40, a point on every rally)
Number of players Both singles and doubles Almost always doubles
Physical demand Low to moderate (light on the knees and back) Moderate to high (smashes and play off the walls add up)
How easy it is to start in Japan A portable net turns a gymnasium or a free court into a court Needs a dedicated enclosed court, so venues are limited

1. Court and walls: the biggest difference is whether the walls are in play

ガラス壁から跳ね返ったボールを打つパデル選手

The presence of walls is what separates them most. A padel court is 20m×10m, enclosed on four sides by glass at the back (around 3m high) and mesh above, and players keep the rally going by hitting the ball back after it rebounds. Turning the walls into an ally the way squash does is the appeal, and it is also where padel departs furthest from tennis.

A pickleball court, meanwhile, is 13.41m×6.10m, almost the same as a badminton court, and there are no walls. Once the ball leaves the court, the point is decided there and then. For court dimensions and how to think about setting one up, seesee the complete guide to pickleball court sizessums it up in detail.

“Enclosed space” or “open space”

  • Padel: the walls keep the ball alive, so rallies run long
  • Pickleball: the ball goes out and the point is over. The call is simple

2. Gear: the racket construction and the ball are different things

ピックルボール用パドルとパデル用ラケットとボールの比較

The equipment differs more than it looks. A padel racket carries no strings: it is a moulded frame with holes through the face and foam in the core. The face is smaller and thicker than a tennis racket's. A pickleball paddle is a wide, flat board, shaped like an oversized table tennis bat.

The balls are opposites too. Padel uses a rubber ball close to a tennis ball, with the internal pressure lowered a little to keep the bounce down. The pickleball is a hard perforated plastic ball that does not carry far and catches the wind. That tendency to lose speed is one reason beginners can keep a rally going. For the basics of choosing a paddle, seeBest pickleball paddles | How to choose, from beginner to advanced.

The Difference in Ball Feel

  • Padel: the rubber ball gives you something to hit against, which suits players coming from tennis
  • Pickleball: with a light plastic ball, how you present the face matters more than power
Gear Pickleball Padel
Hitting implement Flat paddle (wide face) Moulded racket with holes (smaller face)
Ball Perforated plastic ball Low-pressure rubber ball
Rough price range for the racket Entry-level models are within easy reach Tends to run higher than pickleball

3. Rules and scoring: the serve and how the bounce is handled

Both are served underhand, below the waist. In padel you bounce the ball on your own side first, then drive it diagonally across. Pickleball has the two-bounce rule, where the serve and the return are followed by at least one bounce on each side, which bans an immediate volley early in the point.

The scoring is where they part. Padel counts 15-30-40 as tennis does, and the side that wins the rally scores whether or not it served. Pickleball traditionally lets only the serving side score, playing to 11 and win by 2 (in recent years some tournaments have moved to scoring on every rally, that is, rally scoring). The scoring rules on the pickleball side are easier to sort out if you read them alongsidePickleball vs tennisas well.

The difference in the rules at the net

Pickleball has the non-volley zone (the kitchen) in front of the net, and volleying while inside it is banned. It keeps players from trading blows at point-blank range and creates the give-and-take of the rally, a rule that belongs to pickleball alone. Padel has no such zone; positioning around the walls is where the exchange is won instead.

4. Workload and wear on the body: if you are choosing for ease

Padel asks for explosive movement, with plenty of smashing and turning off the walls. Rallies keep going in the doubles-centred format, but the sport takes real fitness. A pickleball court is smaller and the ball loses speed, so the load on the knees and back is lighter and a wide range of ages can share the same court.

If you are not confident about your fitness, or you are a senior player

  • If a light load comes first, pickleball fits
  • If you want the power of the rallies and the tactics off the walls, padel

5. Cost and getting started: if you want to start in Japan now

The gap is plain on ease of entry. Padel needs a dedicated court enclosed on four sides, which costs a lot to build, and the number of venues in Japan is still limited. Each court takes a large footprint, so venues struggle to add courts, and because it is almost always doubles you need four players every time. By the nature of the sport, finding a place to play and people to play with is harder.

Pickleball needs only a portable net on a badminton or tennis court, and it is spreading through gymnasiums and public facilities. Entry-level gear is within easy reach as well, and for a guide to what it costs to start, seeWhat does it cost to start pickleball?. To find somewhere to play near you, start fromnationwide court info and how to find one.

What they share: both are new sports born from combining others

Differences have filled this piece, but there is common ground. Both came out of mixing existing racket sports, and both are growing the number of players worldwide on shorter rallies than tennis and a gentler way in. The underhand serve, and the fact that beginners get to enjoy rallies early, are shared too. For how far the sport has spread in Japan, seethe state of pickleball in Japanexplains it in detail.

Which should you start? Choosing by type

Choose by your goal and your surroundings and it gets simple. Use the following as a guide.

Pickleball suits you if

  • You want to start easily at a gymnasium or public facility nearby
  • You want to keep the initial cost down
  • You want to keep the load off your knees and back and play for years, or enjoy it with family and across generations
  • You want to play on your own as well as in doubles

Padel suits you if

  • You want the dynamic rallies the walls create
  • You like the teamwork and the tactics of doubles
  • There is a venue with dedicated courts where you live

If you cannot decide, try pickleball first: venues are easier to find and gear is easier to put together, so the appeal of racket sports comes through quickly.

Summary

Pickleball and padel split clearly on walls, gear, scoring and how easily you can start. Padel for the power of rallies off the walls, pickleball for ease and staying with it — that is the clean way to put it. Start with whichever you can try nearby and find the one that fits you. FAQ

Q1: Which is easier for a beginner, pickleball or padel?

A1: Both are built so that keeping a rally going is easy. Counting the step of getting started, though, pickleball is simpler: no dedicated court is needed, and entry-level gear is easy to put together.

Q2: Why does padel have walls?

A2: Because hitting the ball back after it rebounds off the walls to keep the rally alive is what makes padel padel. Tactics that use the walls the way squash does come into play, and that creates an exchange different from tennis.

Q3: How does the scoring differ?

A3: Padel uses the tennis format: win the rally and you score, whether or not you served. Pickleball traditionally lets only the serving side score (from 2026, some tournaments can also choose scoring on every rally).

Q4: Which has more venues in Japan?

A4: Pickleball has more places to start at the moment. It can be set up with a portable net on a badminton court and the like, while padel needs a dedicated enclosed court, which limits venues.

Q5: Which one does tennis experience carry over to?

A5: The racket-sport basics carry over to both, but the scoring is closer in padel. The underhand serve differs from tennis in both and takes getting used to, and in pickleball the light ball makes how finely you present the face decisive.
