Over the long autumn holiday, a department store rooftop in Osaka turns into a court. Takashimaya Osaka will run a World New Sports Taster Event for five days, from Saturday, September 19 to Wednesday, September 23, on a special setup on the 8th-floor rooftop. Visitors can try the American-bornPickleball, Finland's Molkky and Hungary's Teqball for 550 yen including tax, or free. One more entrance to sport you can drop into empty-handed has appeared in the middle of a shopping district.
From a pickleball point of view, these five days are not just a retail event. They are a test of pushing the sport into shoppers' path and putting people who have never held a paddle onto a court.
Three new sports side by side on the rooftop
The center of the event is the 8th-floor rooftop. The pickleball taster runs for three days, September 19 to 21, from 10:30 to 17:00, with roughly 30 minutes of play per session. The fee is 550 yen including tax, and payment is cashless only. Each session takes 1 to 12 people, and it is limited to junior high school age and up. Pickleball Base Osaka, run by local court operator Luck Housing, cooperates and supervises.
Molkky is on September 22 and Teqball on September 23, both from 11:00 to 17:00 and free. Molkky scores by knocking down wooden pins, and Teqball is a soccer-derived game played on a curved table using the feet and head. Paddle, throwing and footwork sit in one place, each with a different physical character. Alongside them, a pop-up for the paddle brand Gamma runs on the 6th-floor Rose Patio.
Why a department store lays a court on its roof
For department stores the rooftop was once a draw that brought families in with amusement rides and beer gardens. Putting new sports in that space shifts the reason to visit from buying to trying. The 550 yen price is not set to make a profit; it works more like an admission ticket meant to lengthen the stay and feed spending inside the store.
