A city project selling that way of spending a day off has launched in Shibuya: W ARC, started jointly by Noah Indoor Stage, which runs tennis schools nationwide, and MIC FIELD, a creative studio in Shibuya. On September 12 they held their first event, COFFEE & PICKLE CLUB, at a cafe in Jinnan, handing paddles to terrace customers for free.
Seen as a move to take pickleball out of facilities and into the street, this lineup says a lot. It builds a route separate from the conventional entry point of booking a court and hitting, coming instead from the cafe and running side.
From Yoyogi Park to a Shibuya cafe: the route W ARC connects
W ARC's banner is the combination "RUN × PICKLEBALL × COFFEE": move your body in Yoyogi Park, play pickleball on the terrace or floor of a Shibuya cafe, then stay for a coffee and conversation. Exercise, sport and rest become a single flow, with the whole city treated as a playground.
At the first COFFEE & PICKLE CLUB, held on September 12 at Roasted COFFEE LABORATORY Shibuya Jinnan, terrace customers got a free pickleball taster while the half court on the second floor was opened for a fee. Paddle demos ran alongside it, so first-timers could feel the differences between models on the spot.
Why a major tennis school teamed up with a creative agency
The two operators have clearly separate roles. Noah Indoor Stage, based in Himeji, Hyogo, runs tennis schools across Japan and has spent the past few years pushing pickleball and planning and running facilities. It brings sporting know-how and the practical side of court operations. MIC FIELD, a Shibuya creative studio founded in March 2026, handles everything from concept design to video, space and experience design. Its role is to wrap the sport in presentation.
That division of labor signals a refusal to talk about pickleball only in terms of fitness or winning and losing. W ARC starts from the reality that city dwellers, chased by work and information, struggle to hold on to time for themselves. It uses the sport as an entry point for making a small gap in the day and connecting with people while moving. That is also why it plays out in a park and a cafe rather than inside a sports facility.

Earlier cases of pickleball leaving the facility for the street
Shibuya has lately turned into something of a testing ground for pickleball. In volleyball's SV League,the Tokyo Great Bears have launched a pickleball club in Shibuya, and pro sports clubs are starting to build a home for the game. Clubs, local government, developers, and now a community born in a cafe. In an area as small as Shibuya, several players with different entry points are standing at once.
What community-led recruitment changes about the sport
Court-centered recruitment starts by gathering people who already want to hit. W ARC reverses the order, putting a paddle in the hands of people who came to run or to drink coffee. Interest in the sport is not the entry point; the sport slips in as part of how you spend time in the city. That construction can reach people who have never shown up at a sports shop or a court booking site.
For equipment makers and schools, a place where demos and a cafe sit together is a valuable point of contact. Talk to someone while the feel of the ball is still in your hand, agree to play again, and a one-off experience becomes the start of a relationship. W ARC plans to take the model born in Shibuya to cities across Japan, and whether it works depends on whether cafes and parks elsewhere can host the game.
