Types of pickleball bags

Pickleball bags are broadly divided into four types. Understand the features of each and choose the one that suits your play style.

Paddle case (sling type)

A slim case that holds one to two paddles. Many have a casual design you can carry over the shoulder or crossbody. It's convenient when you're quickly heading to a nearby court. Models with pockets that also fit small items like balls and a towel are popular.

Backpack type

A backpack type that leaves both hands free. The mainstream is a large-capacity type that can hold two to four paddles plus shoes, a change of clothes, a bottle, and more. It's suited to traveling by bicycle or train, and is also recommended for those who stop by the court on the way home from work.

Tote bag type

A type you carry as a tote, like a tennis bag. It's characterized by a wide opening that makes it easy to take things in and out. There are also models that can hold four to six paddles, convenient for players who carry spare paddles.

Duffel type

A large-capacity sports bag. It has the storage capacity to handle tournament travel and long play, ideal for those who want to consolidate all their gear—wear, towel, supplements, and more—into one.

Points to check when choosing

The paddle storage mechanism

Check whether there's a dedicated paddle sleeve or a cushioned compartment so the paddle doesn't get scratched by contact with other items. In particular, since scratches on a carbon-face paddle affect spin performance, protective features are a key point.

Shoe storage

Whether there's a shoe compartment that lets you store used shoes separately from other items is a big point. If it's made of breathable mesh material, moisture and odor are less likely to be trapped.

Ball pocket

It's convenient to have a dedicated pocket that holds two to four balls. With a mesh side pocket, you can also check the balls' condition at a glance.

Cooling / warming function

For summer play, a cooler pocket lets you carry cold drinks. Models with an insulated bottle holder are especially popular with outdoor players.

Waterproof / water-repellent properties

For those who play on outdoor courts, a bag of waterproof or water-repellent material that can handle sudden rain gives peace of mind. With a model whose bottom is waterproofed, the contents stay dry even placed directly on wet ground.

A comparison of popular brands' bags

JOOLA、Selkirk、Franklinand other major paddle brands also offer their own bag lineups. Because the brand colors and logos match your paddle, a coordinated look is possible.

On the other hand, brands like GEARBOX and Onix offer bags with a focus on functionality, popular with those seeking pro-grade durability and storage capacity.

Reasonably priced pickleball bags are increasing on Amazon and Rakuten too, and for beginners, starting with a backpack type of around 3,000 to 5,000 yen is a safe bet. Checking usability first and then stepping up to your preferred brand is the smart way to buy.

Summary: Choose to match your play style

For casual play once or twice a week, a sling case; for those who play frequently, a backpack type; and for those who enter tournaments, a duffel type is recommended. Check at minimum the paddle protection features and whether there's shoe storage, and enjoy a comfortable pickleball life.
