Gabriel Tardio, ranked second in the World Pickleball Rankings (WPR), and Noe Khlif. At the Major League Pickleball (MLP) final in New York at the end of August, the two stared each other down from opposite ends of the court; at the PPA Tour Asia event in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, they stand on the same side. In the seedings PPA Tour Asia released on September 4, the new pair took the top seed in men's doubles. The stage is an Asian tournament with up to 300,000 dollars on the line, Khlif's first appearance in Asia and Tardio's first trip to Malaysia. For players in Japan who follow PPA and MLP broadcasts, it is the way team play and tour play swap opponent and teammate, compressed into a single pairing.
What the announcement settled
What PPA Tour Asia released is the seeding table for the Leapmotor Kuala Lumpur Cup 2026, held from September 9 to 13 at The Hood in Kuala Lumpur. The event sits at the 1000 level in the PPA Asia tier system, with Tardio and Khlif seeded first in men's doubles and Augustus Ge and Len Yang seeded second. The top seed in women's singles is Kaitlyn Christian. Tardio is also placed at the top of mixed doubles alongside men's doubles, putting him front and center as the face of the event. At the announcement stage the news is the pairing rather than any result, and local coverage carried its own surprise that two players who were opponents on different teams barely two weeks earlier now stand as the top seed.
How a rival from MLP becomes your top-seeded partner
Some readers will find this confusing. How do two players who were fighting each other only weeks ago end up on the same bench in about two weeks? The answer is that professional pickleball runs on two tournament systems with different characters. MLP is a team competition in which franchised teams build rosters, and players compete as members of their club alongside teammates assigned by draft or trade. The two were opponents in New York simply because they happened to have been allocated to different teams.New Jersey 5s win their first MLP title, and Waters gets her revenge two years onexplained, results in MLP come down to roster construction and the lineup on the day. The PPA Tour, by contrast, is an individual-driven circuit where players choose their own partners, so who you play with is your own call. That is why an opponent from team play can be picked as your strongest partner on tour.
Partner choice moves the standings
Top players swapping partners across a season is not unique to this case.Shimabukuro pairs with JW Johnson as the PPA's new season reshuffles the top duostracked, pairings at the top are reshuffled frequently. The new Tardio-Khlif pairing is an extension of that fluidity. When two strong players join forces, the pecking order of winning pairs resets. The world number two partnering a player making his Asian debut makes the men's doubles at the KL Cup harder to call.
The tournament basics in numbers
The table gathers only the facts that could be confirmed from the announcement and related coverage.

The 300,000 dollars is the ceiling PPA Tour Asia states, distributed by event and finishing position. In yen it is on the order of 44 million, real weight for a tournament held in Asia. The event runs five days at The Hood in Kuala Lumpur. Tardio has already taken an Asian title this year at the MB Hanoi Cup 2026 and arrives in Malaysia as the favorite. For Khlif this is his first tournament in Asia at all, and he carries the task of meshing with the world number two in unfamiliar surroundings.
What Japanese players and organizers can take from it
This leaves a few pointers for people who play in Japan and for those who run tournaments and facilities.
What players can learn from partner selection
A world number two taking the top seed with a brand-new partner is possible precisely because the tour is individual-driven. At the level of forming a pair in Japan, too, who you play with changes how far you get. Simply agreeing in advance on your partner's preferred court position, their dominant hand and who takes the front and the back makes a freshly formed pair fit together more easily. Tardio and Khlif show that the combination itself can swing a result, not just how much you practice. If you are settling a pair before entering a local tournament in Japan, matching complementary roles rather than similar ability levels is the practical approach.
Asia's pro circuit has moved closer to Japan
A PPA Asia 1000 held in Kuala Lumpur with the world's top players flying in means the professional stage has come geographically closer as seen from Japan. As the travel hurdle drops, entering an Asian tournament becomes a realistic option for players based here.Maomi Yuki, aiming to compete at 46, fell for pickleball in Malaysiashows, Malaysia is already becoming familiar ground for competitors from Japan. The more Asia's circuit grows, the more entry points Japanese players have into main draws abroad. For organizers too, how strong pairs are put together in Asia and how crowds are drawn make live material for building domestic events.
