New Jersey 5s take both matches, each settled by a DreamBreaker
The final was contested over two matches across the weekend, and the 5s won the first 22-20 and the second 21-9. Worth noting is that on both days the four doubles games finished 2-2, pushing the result all the way to the DreamBreaker. Women's doubles, men's doubles and the two mixed doubles games each split 1-1, and as a team contest it stayed unreadable to the end. The 22-20 on day one came after both sides traded the lead around 20 points before the 5s wrenched it away, and that one-point exchange decided the end of a long season.
The venue, in the middle of Central Park, was symbolic. It mirrored exactly where pickleball stands now: a sport growing into a show that draws thousands of spectators in outdoor public space.
MLP is a four-player team format, with men and women competing on the same footing
Here is how MLP works, since the format is still unfamiliar in Japan. MLP sits apart from tours where individual players chase prize money. Each team is built around two men and two women and competes team against team. A single tie consists of four games, women's doubles, men's doubles and two mixed doubles, and each game is played to 11 points.
A structure in which men and women contribute equally to the team result is rare among professional leagues in other sports. A win by the women carries the same weight as a win by the men. Bringing the tactics and the easy support of a team format into a racket sport usually watched as an individual one lies behind MLP's quick growth in audience. From 2026, teams can use more than four players in a tie, allowing choices such as fielding different players in women's doubles and in mixed.
Teams are owned by investors with capital, and players move through the draft and trades. As with the 5s' Jorja Johnson, taken for 800,000 dollars, players are increasingly discussed in terms of money. Staksrud, named MVP, is another who reached the top after a mid-season move.
The DreamBreaker decided it on two straight days
What defined this final was the DreamBreaker that settled it. When the four doubles games end 2-2, every player on both teams takes turns in one-on-one singles play, and the tie is decided at 21 points, win by two. Each player handles four rallies before the next takes over. Everyone, substitutes included, gets a turn, and the drama of a match turning in minutes has made it MLP's biggest showpiece. The reality of a format that has even produced dedicated substitute roles is covered inour article on the DreamBreaker specialistsas well.
The 5s won that DreamBreaker on both days. Even when held even in doubles, they could pull clear in the final all-hands battle, and that depth was the substance of their strength through the season.
Waters adds the team crown to her individual titles
In the final she took the head-to-head with Kate Fahey in both days' DreamBreakers, 6-4 and 6-2, and carried the team's points. Her speed in reading the play and taking the initiative before the ball comes back has been linked to the soccer she played as a child. The structure of that strength is touched on inour article digging into Waters' anticipationでも触れている。ラケットを握って数年で世界の頂点に立ち、そこから団体戦の穴を埋めるまでを実現させた。
MVP Staksrud, from a mid-season trade to the star of the final
The final MVP went to Federico Staksrud of Argentina. He was recognized for his composure under pressure and for the positive lead he gave the team. He changed teams through a trade during the season, taking a title and the MVP award at a new home. How players move between teams in MLP is traced inour article on Staksrud's sudden tradein detail. Even with a name like Waters on the roster, a team tie comes down to who takes the one point in men's doubles or the DreamBreaker. The value of the player trusted with that point was made visible in the form of the MVP award.
5s in the final two years running, with depth behind a long-awaited title
Shock runner-up two years running, having stopped the 5s during the season
The St. Louis Shock, beaten in the final, had shown clear quality in reaching it. Mid-season the Shock stopped the Waters-led 5s, and there was even a moment when they handed the unbeaten women their first loss. How that tie unfolded is reported inour article on the Shock's upset over the 5s. Across a year they are rivals who trade blows, and at the end of the season the 5s edged it. For the Shock it is a second straight final, and a finish that leaves the frustration of falling one win short.
What enthusiasts and facility operators in Japan can read from it
What the MLP final shows is that pickleball has entered a stage where it can draw spectators and capital as a team spectacle, beyond the frame of an individual sport. A design in which men and women play for the same team and everyone, substitutes included, has a role in the DreamBreaker widens the room for companies and local communities to own teams. In Japan, corporate leagues and municipal taster sessions are starting up around the country, and the appeal of team play can serve as an entry point that widens participation. The sight of thousands roaring at a team contest in Central Park gives operators of permanent courts and tournaments material for thinking about what to prepare next. Players who have reached the top of the sport and the team structures that support them are together pushing this game upward.
