Move the 7.5g weight up and it flies; move it down and it stops
At the core of the OMNI is a mechanism Selkirk calls the adjustable MOI (moment of inertia) weight system. One 7.5g weight sits on each side, and with no tape, glue or tools, you pinch it out at the edge and slot it into a different channel. The Dink's review describes the motion as removing it at the edge and putting it back wherever you like, and notes that the notches in the channel guide the positioning.
What changes is the swing weight. Move the weight toward the tip and you get more plow-through, and the ball carries. Set it in the middle and the paddle behaves neutrally; move it down or take it out and the paddle gets easier to handle, so resets die more readily. Same frame, three or more distinct personalities.
| Weight position | What changes | Where it works |
|---|---|---|
| Toward the tip (up) | More swing weight, more push | Against opponents you want to overpower with drives and smashes |
| Central | Neutral behavior, balanced between attack and defense | A first meeting where you cannot read the opponent's level |
| Down, or removed | Light and quick, the face absorbs the ball | Days when you want more resets and blocks in fast exchanges |
Figures from Selkirk's official release and The Dink's review. Each weight is 7.5g.
ReactCore sandwiches the central foam between two rings
The OMNI's feel comes from the structure of its core. Selkirk calls it ReactCore: a floating PureFoam center surrounded by two concentric rings, an inner PureFoam ring and an outer EVA power ring. The inner ring cushions defensive resets, while the outer ring returns energy on drives and overheads. A soft center and a springy perimeter in one panel, with the job split by where on the face the ball lands.
Building a core in layers of foam is not unique to the OMNI. It follows directly from paddlesshifting from honeycomb to foam cores, with makers now competing on the internal design of the core. The OMNI's twin rings are one example of that competition being cut finer still — down to which part of the face is soft and which part pops.
Adjustable paddles arrive now because regulation has capped power and spin
Why does the idea of changing a paddle's character with weights arrive now? Two trends sit behind it. One is power. With approved paddles reported to have had their power cut to around 60% of peak levels, competing on pop alone no longer creates much separation. The other is spin. Witha 2100 spin-rate cap due in October, the room to gain through surface treatment is shrinking too. With pop and spin both capped, the next variable manufacturers can touch has moved to balance point and the range of swing-weight adjustment. The OMNI's weight system reads as a move onto that newly open ground.
How players in Japan can make use of a $300 paddle
Brought back to court conditions in Japan, the practical points look like this.
- On days when you are matching the quick ball speed of an indoor gymnasium, move the weights down and play a setting where the face absorbs the ball, adding blocks and resets.
- Outdoors on windy days when the ball does not carry, move them up toward the tip to make up for the lost push.
- When you cannot read an opponent's level in a first meeting, return them to the middle and start with neutral behavior while you assess.
- Even if swapping mid-match is impractical, deciding your baseline position in practice makes fine adjustment on the day much faster.
This is a tool built on the assumption that you will move the weights repeatedly to find your answer, so rather than judging it right after purchase, the right approach is to try each of the three positions for a week.
What a two-jobs-in-one bet really asks
What makes the OMNI interesting is that it moves the power-or-control choice from the moment of purchase to adjustment during use. In a sport where the ceilings on pop and spin are now visible, the next point of difference is shifting to how many ways you can retune the paddle for the opponent in front of you that day. $300 is not cheap, but the more paddles you haul around the courts, the more room there is to cut luggage, cost and second-guessing all at once. The cheapest way into judging the OMNI is to first check where your current paddle's balance point sits, then add a few grams of lead tape at the tip and feel what moving the balance does.
