Japan's pickleball population is expanding rapidly. The number of players, about 3,000 in 2023, reached 5,000 in April 2024, 10,000 in December of that year, and in March 2025over 45,000was reached. That's more than 15-fold growth in a little over two years. But the reality that facility infrastructure hasn't kept up with this rapid growth is also becoming clear.

日本でのピックルボール普及を支えているのは、テニス・バドミントン・卓球など既存ラケットスポーツの経験者だ。ルールがシンプルで学習曲線が短く、全年齢層が一緒にプレーできるとされている。また、「テニスより体に負担が少ない」という点も、初心者層や年配層の参加につながっている。
Facility shortage is the biggest challenge
急増するプレーヤーに対して、専用コートが圧倒的に不足している。日本のほとんどのプレーヤーは借用した体育館やテニスコートでプレーしており、専用施設は全国でもごく限られた数にとどまっていた。
こうした中、堺市に西日本最大級のPickleball Base Osakaが4月1日にオープンした。国際基準コート6面を備え、年中無休・8:00〜22:00で運用されている。また、The Picklrは5年以内に全国20施設の展開を発表しており、専用施設の拡充が進みつつある。
国際大会への参加も増加
記事公開当時、日本ピックルボール連盟により国内大会の整備が進められていた。一部の日本人選手は、US Open (April 11-18)andMB Hanoi Cupなど海外の主要大会に参加している。

2025年に整備された東京タワーピックルボールコートは、スポーツ施設としてだけでなく観光スポットとしても機能している。外国人観光客の来訪も見られ、インバウンド観光の観点から関心を集めている。
