Long Yufei takes two women's titles in Singapore as China's women start reaching the world's summit

At the PPA Asia 500 Rep Motor Singapore Open, which closed on July 26, China's Yufei Long took gold in both women's singles and doubles. She beat Annie Xie in the singles final and won doubles alongside Hong Kong-based Kara Whitley. The men's side drew attention for Jack Wong (Hong Kong) and Japan's Kenta Miyoshi, but for Japanese women players the change on the women's side carries the heavier meaning. Players from Asia who can reach a world podium are now appearing one after another.

A 26-year-old who put her doctorate on hold took both singles and doubles

Yufei Long is 26. She played NCAA Division I tennis at Boston College and Vanderbilt University, and after graduating had a place waiting in a doctoral program in biomedical informatics. She deferred that place, won at the University of Washington and Washington University in St. Louis, and now bets on pickleball full time. She spent time in Mesa, Arizona, through Trailblazers, the development program launched by UPA Asia, and went straight up to the pro tour from there.

The two golds in Singapore were not a one-off good year. Long sits at the top of the PPA Tour Asia women's singles rankings with 4,050 points. Carrying the baseline steadiness she built in tennis into fast exchanges at the kitchen line is what puts her a step ahead of the rest of Asia. She has called representing her country at the Olympics her "ultimate dream," and the fact that her motivation leans on carrying a nation rather than career convenience also reads as room to grow.

A Hong Kong doubles partner, a Chinese-heritage opponent in the final: the women's field has turned over in a few years

What should not be missed about these two titles is that the players around her came from the same part of Asia. Kara Whitley, Long's doubles partner, is based in Hong Kong. Annie Xie, beaten in the singles final, comes from a tier of players who would not have reached a final a few years ago. Women's finals once monopolized by North American contenders now carry East and Southeast Asian names.

Player Base Singapore result / current standing
Rong Yufei China Gold in women's singles and doubles / No. 1 in Tour Asia women's singles
Kara Whitley Based in Hong Kong Gold in women's doubles (with Long)
Annie Xie — Silver in women's singles (lost to Long in the final)
Rika Fujiwara Japan Won women's singles at the PPA Asia Tokyo Open
Aiko Yoshitomi Japan First Japanese woman to sign a PPA pro contract

All figures come from each event's official announcements and organizer notices. Annie Xie's base could not be confirmed in published information, so that field is left blank.

160 women in Sabah, Malaysia: a regional base behind the winners

Looking only at two titles at the top makes this sound like a story about individual talent, but women's pickleball in Asia is swelling from the bottom. In Sabah, Malaysia, an event drew 160 women on its own, and participation is growing outside the capital region rather than in it. How the spread of regional events becomes the soil for the next Yufei Long is easiest to see inthe Sabah event that gathered 160 women. Southeast Asia is climbing the same order that women's growth in Japan follows, building up from beginner classes in gymnasiums, only at much greater speed.

The width of the base feeds straight into how fierce the fight for national selection is. The more rivals there are at home, the less the top players have to drop the quality of their practice. China gaining a Beijing event means this cycle is starting to close inside the country, and that is a gap Japan should be aware of.

Even with Rika Fujiwara winning in Tokyo, there are opponents Japanese women have yet to beat

Japanese women are not standing still either. Rika Fujiwara won women's singles at the PPA Asia 500 Tokyo Open and also reached the podium in doubles with Kyo Sawaki. Aiko Yoshitomi, who is married to Kenta Miyoshi, became the first Japanese woman to sign a pro contract with the PPA. Having players who can win outright at a home event is progress that did not exist a few years ago.

Still, there is distance between winning at home and beating a player like Long in Singapore or, before long, Beijing. What world-champion-class women have is the speed of reading a point and taking position before the ball arrives, and the root of that has been analyzed asa soccer-like sense of space. If the pattern of one player sweeping three titles, as Australia's Dikosavljevic did, continues, the question put to Japanese women becomeswhether they can be the side that breaks the monopoly. As Fujiwara took bronze at the 2025 PPA Asia Vietnam Open, the next fork is how much experience of taking silver and bronze on the same stage as overseas players the women's side can build up.

Three yardsticks for Japanese women players over the next year

Here are some practical ways to look at Long's two titles so they do not stay a distant overseas story. The points work for people who follow the sport and for people working to grow it.

  • How fast tennis players convert: Long came from Division I tennis and went straight to the top. Japan has the same raw material. Watch whether there is a path guiding converts into women's singles.
  • How often the domestic top players meet: How many times a year do players at the level of Fujiwara and Yoshitomi face each other? How will Japan build the environment China gained with its Beijing event, where world-level opponents are available at home?
  • How many overseas events women travel to: Singapore, Malaysia and soon Beijing. World rankings move on how often players advance away from home, not only on home wins.

The year Yufei Long staked by putting her doctorate on hold was also the year women's pickleball in Asia turned from a sport to watch into a sport to win. Whether Japanese women can start the same shift depends on what they aim for after a home gold medal.
