A player who left the tour with a respiratory illness launches their own paddle brand, Witness

A US pro who had stepped away from the front line of the tour is back in the spotlight, not on court but in equipment. Thomas Wilson, a three-time PPA Tour gold medalist who now commentates for Pickleball TV, has launched his own paddle brand, Witness Pickleball. The US outlet pickleball.com reported the move on September 9, 2026, and the first paddle is due out in autumn 2026. Players becoming owners of equipment brands is picking up speed in North America, and for Japan, where the market is only beginning to grow, it is a shift that could change how paddles are chosen and stocked.

Witness grew out of garage prototypes, with the first paddle due in autumn 2026

According to pickleball.com, Wilson has been away from sanctioned play since 2024 with a lingering respiratory problem. What he worked on while unable to compete was paddle-making, something he had done since his playing days. He is reported to have cut countless prototypes in his home garage and, for production, to have met repeatedly with a Chinese manufacturer face to face before turning it into a brand. No photos or prices have been released. What is fixed is the company name, Witness Pickleball, the autumn 2026 launch window, and the fact that Wilson himself is the founder.

In the interview with the outlet, Wilson said that when he was on tour, plenty of pros and people around him knew he was obsessed with paddles, and he described his motivation as chasing a feel he could take into a match through more prototypes than he could count. The brand did not begin from a position of selling off-the-shelf gear; it began from building the one paddle he wanted to use while still competing. That order of events is the heart of the story.

From three PPA golds to the microphone, with his playing career on hold

Wilson is a doubles player with a record on the North American tour. He previously partnered Vivienne David in mixed doubles, and their run at the Houston event was covered by The Dink and others. Three gold medals means a player who kept winning through draws on tour rather than landing a single result. The name is not widely known in Japan yet, but in North America he is firmly recognized as a former top player now in the commentary booth.

He sits in the Pickleball TV commentary booth now

Players who shift from competing to commentary are nothing unusual, but in Wilson's case this is a break for health reasons rather than a retirement announcement. Sitting on the side that watches and describes matches, while still able to judge the fine details of equipment, suits paddle development well. Makers who have both a pro's feel for a test hit and the ability to put it into words on air are not common.

His match appearances stopped in 2024

Being away from sanctioned play for close to two years cuts both ways for Witness. A brand sold under the name of an active top player has strong pull, but Wilson is not a player who is winning now. The brand's credibility will have to come from his obsession with development and from the product itself, not from his recent results.

More players are starting their own paddle companies

This is Wilson's personal story, and it is also a frame from the 2026 paddle market. Against the established model in which big brands sign players and borrow their names, examples of players taking ownership of the brand are surfacing in North America and Asia. In Vietnam, the young player Quang Duongunveiled the second generation of his signature paddle, the Wika QD V2, in Hanoi, so the player-as-maker structure has begun to move in Asia as well. Wilson's Witness can be read alongside it as the North American case.

The supply side is a tailwind too. Once the mold and the materials are settled, paddles can be mass-produced at a Chinese factory, and even an individual who deals with a Chinese manufacturer directly can launch a brand from a small run. That is exactly why the market is flooded with new products, and why some models sell out overseas before they reach shops in Japan. Pickle Times has coveredfive new paddles not yet available in Japan, and new designs such as foam cores are turning over on a short cycle. Major brands are moving too:JOOLA's first full-foam paddle, the POWER FX,rebuilds the structure outright, and the pace of technical updates only keeps rising. Player-owned brands are exploiting the room to move nimbly inside that fast current.

What Japanese players and shops should watch

For readers in Japan, the Witness launch is not just a question of whether it can be bought in the autumn. When an individual or start-up brand launches overseas, what Japanese users run into is not price or performance but availability and thin support. Keeping a cool head about that saves you from panic-buying while you wait on an import.

Mostly sold direct from overseas, and hard to get hold of

Start-up brands make small first runs, and the paddles are often available only from the official site or a handful of overseas retailers. Shipping and customs push the real price up sharply, and how breakage replacement or approval (certification for tournament use) is handled is hard to read. Witness has released no product information, so at launch the first three things to check are whether it is approved, whether they ship to Japan, and what the warranty covers. While those are unclear, it is safer to treat it as something to test-hit and talk about rather than to take into matches.

How shops and schools should decide on stock

For shops and schools that handle equipment, a player-owned brand is awkward stock. The story sells, but supply is unstable and inventory risk is high. A staged approach is realistic: hold a few for test hits at first, then set order volumes once you have seen customer reaction and how reliably restocks arrive. Whether you have the setup to tell the brand's story in store and on social media is another dividing line in the stocking decision.

Summary: the move available in Japan right now

Witness Pickleball is a brand started by a former top player obsessed with paddles, not by someone winning today. The product stays out of sight until autumn 2026, but as part of a worldwide shift toward players becoming makers, it is worth watching now for Japanese players and shops. The first move available is to bookmark the official Witness announcement channels and, at launch, ask first whether they ship to Japan and whether the paddle carries tournament approval. Only once those two are settled does a talked-about paddle become a real option for match play.
