What happens outside the win and the loss enters the number for the first time

By DUPR's account, ratings from August will be "enhanced" by AI video analysis supplied by technology partners, on top of competition results. Four things are listed for players: ratings by skill, shot-by-shot analysis, personalized coaching suggestions, and automatically generated highlights.

The technology partners named as connecting include PlaySight, PB Vision, SwingVision, Volley, Track Tennis and Save My Play. DUPR describes its ecosystem as linking more than two million players with over 15,000 clubs, leagues, tournaments, governing bodies and technology partners. The tagline attached to the announcement was "One player profile. One trusted rating. One connected ecosystem."

Put another way, DUPR has widened what it evaluates from"the result of the match" to "the substance of the play". A match lost 3-11 and one fought out 9-11 were already treated differently in the old calculation, but what happened inside those rallies never entered the number.

August is not sudden, it is the third move built up since spring

This change reads less as a one-off announcement than as the result of moves played in order since spring 2026.

The first was the PB Vision partnership on April 13. With it, DUPR opened a route for players who enter neither tournaments nor leagues to obtain an initial rating from a single recorded match. PB Vision is a service dedicated to AI video analysis for pickleball, reading several thousand data points per match: shot quality, movement, positioning, errors, court coverage. From that come ratings on six axes — serve, return, offense, defense, agility and consistency. New users get one analysis free.

The second was the expanded tie-up with Save My Play on April 20, which covers the recording side. A small camera that needs no server sits at the court, recording is controlled by gesture, and the waiting time between points is cut automatically. The footage flows to DUPR by way of PB Vision.

Open the entrance, put the equipment in place, then reach into the rating calculation itself. The August change is the third move.

Who handles what: the partner roles laid out

Player / serviceRole it playsConnection to DUPR

Save My PlayCameras installed permanently at the court. No server required, recording controlled by gesture, gaps between points cut automaticallyHands the recorded data to DUPR via PB Vision

SwingVision/Volley/Track TennisRecording and analysis using a device or appSame as above
The player's own smartphoneSelf-shot footage through a supported appWorks as an entry point to analysis even without a smart court

The row not to overlook in this table is the last one. Even with no camera-equipped facility nearby, a single smartphone is enough to produce the material for a rating. The design assumes from the outset regions that capital spending on equipment never reaches.

What DUPR, PB Vision and Save My Play said

DUPR CEO Tito Machado said at the time of the PB Vision partnership that adding more accessible entry points into the DUPR system is an important step in growing the sport. In the announcement of the Save My Play tie-up he explained that getting players into the DUPR ecosystem and making it easy for them to engage is the company's central focus. Both statements put lowering the barrier to participation ahead of precise measurement of playing strength.

PB Vision co-founder Mike Arney framed it in more technical terms. What the company focuses on, he said, is evaluating how you actually played, drawing a line between that and win-loss results. Save My Play co-founder David Fox said the goal is to bring high-quality video and analytics to every pickleball court.

Line up the three positions and the division of labor is clear: DUPR designs the system, PB Vision supplies the judging engine, Save My Play lays the recording infrastructure. The trust that a rating stands for is held up from the software side and the hardware side at once.

What helps players in Japan is not accuracy but the removal of the match-count wall

地方の屋外コートでスマートフォンの撮影画角を調整する利用者

This is where it becomes the main issue for readers in Japan. The first wall a DUPR holder here runs into is not accuracy but the number of matches. Tournaments that register results in a DUPR-sanctioned format are still limited in Japan, and someone who only hits with friends on a weekday evening never gets a number. For anyone living outside the big cities, the travel cost of reaching a supported tournament is itself the barrier to entry.

A system that produces an initial rating from a single recording breaks that wall head-on. As when Tokyu Resort Town Tateshina, a second-home resort in Chino, Nagano, opened two USA Pickleball approved outdoor courts in September 2024, courts in Japan are multiplying in places that are not tournament venues. If footage shot there turns into numbers, the base of the playing population and the base of the rating pool take the same shape for the first time. Set against Vietnam, which laid DUPR down first as a common language for the whole country (A Win in Hanoi Now Counts the Same as One in LA — DUPR Lays a Global Standard in Vietnam), Japan's links to the system are still patchy, and the smartphone turns out to be the tool filling those gaps.

A new gap appears at the same time, though: the difference between places where you can record and places where you cannot. Can you set up a tripod on an outdoor public court? Do the ceiling height of a gymnasium and the position of the net let the whole court fit in frame? Does the ball vanish into the late-afternoon backlight? If scores move with shooting conditions rather than with the quality of play, that becomes a fairness problem for the sport. DUPR says ratings derived from AI analysis are marked separately on the profile as AI-assisted, and that tournament and league results remain the main axis of the rating. The design is cautious, and how that distinction is handled in practice will be what tournament organizers in Japan judge it by.

For a facility, a camera stops being equipment and becomes inventory

The larger effect on the market lands on the facility side. Until now a camera at a court was nothing more than a fixture for capturing video. Once it feeds straight into a rating, its position changes. It becomes the very reason members keep coming in order to push their number up.

Indoor facilities in central Tokyo stand to gain most. A business like The Picklr in Toyosu, which built up members ahead of opening with seven indoor courts (US Picklr's 7-court indoor venue in Toyosu, and the funding design that locked in members 3 months before opening), already has shooting conditions that neither weather nor daylight disturbs. A facility that can run permanent cameras indoors gains one more piece of value to put into its membership fee. What Save My Play prepares for facilities is a monetization kit as well: live streams carrying score displays and sponsor slots, and paid access to footage. The thinking treats the camera as inventory rather than cost.

The premise of coaching shifts too. Sansan's move to start testing an AI coach at its Ikebukuro facility (Can an AI coach fill the coaching shortage? Sansan starts testing in Ikebukuro) was a response to the domestic shortage of instructors. Add shot-by-shot analysis reports coming down from DUPR, and the start of a lesson changes from what shall we do today to your defense is the lowest of the six axes, so we will spend 45 minutes there. The human coach's workload does not shrink; the quality of the information they handle changes.

まとめ:AI解析導入、プレーヤーが実施すべき準備

What DUPR reworked is less the formula than the width of the entrance to the rating system. It moves from a world where only people who entered tournaments could hold a number to one where anyone who stood on a court and hit record can. Keeping the AI-assisted distinction to protect competitive rigor shows DUPR's caution as well.
