プロツアー最大手のPPAツアーを運営する米Pickleball Inc.が2026年7月22日、国際大会「ピックルボール・ワールドカップ」との提携を発表した。放映権と商業窓口の獲得が柱だが、競技者にとって最大の転機は、同社が自社契約プロに課していたワールドカップ出場禁止を取り下げたことだ。2027年大会から、適格なPPA契約プロは自国代表として出場できる。PPAツアーはシングルス・ダブルス・ミックスダブルスの3種目でトップ20が18カ国に分かれており、この解禁で「代表チーム」という枠がようやく実体を伴う。
ただし日本にとって、この恩恵は自動的ではない。8月30日開幕のアジア初開催・ダナン大会には、解禁前ということもあり、日本のMLP契約選手は出場できない。2027年ワールドカップまで、日本は代表選考基準の策定と海外プロの招集体制を整える準備期間が与えられた。
The line telling contracted pros to stay away, removed on July 22
Pickleball Inc. is the holding company with the PPA Tour and Major League Pickleball (MLP) under it. Under this agreement it becomes the World Cup'sexclusive media rights holder and commercial sponsorship window, and it says the two sides will also work together on broadcast distribution, international marketing, business development and fan engagement. The World Cup was founded by the Peruvian siblings Ercilio Cabieses and Miranda Cabieses, and has built its identity on players competing under their national flags.
That identity and reality have been out of joint. Players contracted to the PPA were barred from entering, so an event went on calling itself a World Cup with the best players in the world missing. The withdrawal of the ban applies from the 2027 edition and covers eligible pros. What makes a pro eligible had not been published as of the July 22 announcement.
A governing body with an Olympic application and the company that owns the business are now on the same event
Reading this as one company's commercial call misses the thread. The Global Pickleball Federation (GPF), which positions itself as the world governing body, had already signed a multi-year deal with the World Cup on September 16, 2025. The GPF was founded in November 2023 by the United States, Canada, Australia and others after they left the International Pickleball Federation (IPF). In June 2025 a GPF delegation filed for IOC recognition in Lausanne, Switzerland, with the long-term goal of inclusion at the 2032 Brisbane Games. The Japanese federation's move to secure JSPO recognition is the first step on the same staircase (Japan's federation wins JSPO approval, the first step up a long staircase to the Olympics）。
Olympic review asks about more than the number of players. It also asks whether the peak of national team competition really is the peak. Submitting an event the top-ranked players in the world cannot enter as the sport's world championship does not hold up, however it is dressed. With the governing side and the commercial and broadcast side both aboard one event under this agreement, the application and reality finally line up.
Governance of the sport itself, however, is not yet unified. In June 2025 the IPF and the World Pickleball Federation (WPF) voted to merge, becoming a unified body separate from the GPF. Unification with the GPF is still under negotiation. IOC recognition assumes a single international federation per sport, so until that is settled, no amount of tidying up the events gets an application past the front door. That is why the lifting of the ban should not be read as more than it is. Think of what happened after basketball connected national teams and professionals in 1992 and the sequence is textbook.

Japan's current position is concentrated in that cannot-enter cell. Yuta Funamizu, who switched over from soft tennis, became in 2025 the first Japanese player to sign an exclusive contract with the US-based UPA (United Pickleball Association), which runs the PPA Tour and MLP. In MLP he plays for Miami Pickleball Club. As of June 29, 2026 he became the first Japanese man to stand at 25th in the world in DUPR men's doubles, and he won the men's doubles at PPA ASIA 500 Sansan TOKYO OPEN 2026, held in Tachikawa from July 1 to 4 (A homecoming win just as promised: the day Yuta Funamizu beat a former world No. 1 in Tachikawa). That same Funamizu cannot play in the first World Cup held in Asia. The Da Nang edition falls in the year before the ban lifts.
Setting the three parties' explanations side by side
World Cup founder and CEO Ercilio Cabieses said he was hugely excited to team up with Pickleball Inc., adding that the project started from a goal of seeing pickleball at the Olympics, tying the deal to the Games. For the event, it also resolves a long-standing weakness: the absence of its marquee players.
Pickleball Inc. CEO Connor Pardoe said the World Cup embodies what makes international sport compelling, namely national pride and elite players going head to head. Chris Patrick, the company's president of international, pointed to the gains for players: the chance to represent their home country on an international stage, and wider earning opportunities. A tour talking up the release of its own players for national duty feels quite different from other sports, where clubs and federations tend to pull against each other over call-ups.
The governing side has spoken too. At the September 2025 partnership announcement, GPF board member Chandler Carney said the federation was joining the World Cup to lift and unite pickleball on a global scale. Fellow board member Justin Maloof described a record number of national teams gathering in the United States from every continent as a milestone in the sport's history, falling in the year of pickleball's 60th anniversary. From the GPF's founding to the tour coming aboard took roughly two and a half years. That is how long it took for governance, event and commerce to face the same direction.
2026年ダナン大会は最強カードなし、2027年に向けた準備期間
If Japan sends a team, the 2026 Da Nang edition becomes a measurement of strength with the best card pulled out. The opposition is serious. India is coming in with a named captain and an openly stated goal of gold (India goes for gold with captain Harsh, and Japan gets measured at the Da Nang World Cup). Host nation Vietnam drew 7,906 spectators at a domestic event in February 2025, setting a Guinness World Record that broke the previous mark of 5,522. The home pressure will be considerable.
This is not a reason for gloom, though. It is more workable to treat it as two separate questions. What gets measured in 2026 is the depth of the layer raised at home. What gets measured in 2027 is whether Japan has the machinery to call players earning a living abroad back into the national team. The second is a matter of paperwork rather than playing strength, and it can be started on within these 12 months.
- Publish the selection criteria first. Put the method for cross-checking DUPR, the weighting of domestic tournaments and the selection timing into a document
- Work out the call-up procedure for pros based in the United States. Confirm the order of priority when MLP or PPA dates clash with national team duty, before contracts come up for renewal
- Decide where the money for travel and accompanying staff comes from. Unlike individual events, national team competition turns the size of the touring party straight into results
- Use Da Nang in 2026 to find, in competition, the players you can use in 2027. Holding it in Asia makes this the cheapest year for scouting
What sponsors buy widens from the club to the national team
Until now Japanese companies have bought three things: team naming, facilities and individual players. To that listNational teamis added as something to sell. In a sport where the top 20 are scattered across 18 countries, even a small federation with one or two strong players has room to finish high in national team competition. Japan is exactly that kind of country, and the return on investing in the national team slot is likely to run higher than the size of the playing population would suggest.
The change on the broadcast side cannot be ignored either. If World Cup coverage rides the same commercial window as the PPA, the odds that Japanese-speaking viewers can follow the national team go up. For promotion at home, footage of Japanese players competing under the flag appearing regularly means more than the standing of the event itself.
At the same time, having the commercial windows for the tour, the league and the international event gathered in one company raises a new question about the independence of the governing body. Whether the split holds in practice, with the GPF controlling the rules and national eligibility and Pickleball Inc. controlling the business and the broadcasts, is part of what the IOC will look at. Over the long run, how that line is operated matters more than whether lifting the ban was right.

Summary
What changed with the announcement of July 22, 2026 was neither the standing of the event nor the prize money, but the single question of whether the top players can wear their national colors. With that one point moved, the Olympic application, the commercial value of national team competition and each country's national team development finally sit on the same line.
There are three things people in Japan can start on now. Treat the Da Nang edition as reconnaissance in the year before the real thing, and secure a budget for scouting and video records by August. Confirm whether pros under contract abroad can be called into national team activity, before their next contract renewal. And publish the selection criteria so players competing at home can see what they need to accumulate to reach the national team. Ending up in 2027 with players available but no procedure to call them is the one outcome this year can reliably prevent.
