A corporate league that had been running qualifiers at seven venues in Tokyo left the capital for the first time. The first regional round of Corporate Pickleball & BIZ CUP, hosted by Mitsui Fudosan, took place on the evening of Friday, August 7, 2026 at Kita 3-jo Plaza, known as Akapura, in central Sapporo. The venue is a public square on the north side of Odori, lined with office buildings. The picture of paddles sounding out during the after-work hour says exactly what this league is after.
From a player's point of view, the thing to watch is not who won but the shape of the event. Mixed teams from a single company, a weekday evening, free entry. Those three conditions are a clue to how pickleball will spread in Japan.

Akapura sits where Ekimae-dori meets Kita 3-jo-dori, surrounded by an office district where the headquarters of Hokkaido companies and financial institutions cluster. Using an outdoor square from evening into night assumes a route where colleagues can gather after work within a few train stops.

Read the entry conditions one by one and it becomes clear this is not a competition-minded tournament. First, five to eight people from the same company. Unlike the usual pickleball event where individuals or pairs test their skill, entry is only by team. Next, mixed gender is required. Using the fact that pickleball's physical demands leave little gap between men and women, the design puts sales and back office, young and veteran, on the same court.
Then a weekday evening, free of charge. Asking for no weekend travel and pulling the venue into two and a half hours after work makes it easier to bring in employees with no exercise habit. The gear is only a paddle and a plastic ball, the court is smaller than a badminton court, and the rules can be learned in a few minutes. That low threshold, where people with no tennis background can rally from day one, is why it gets chosen as a corporate benefits event.
Turn that around, and the design's center of gravity is on lowering the hurdle for a first appearance rather than on how seriously teams chase the win. Top teams can win a stay at Halekulani Okinawa by way of the final, but the main motivator is not the prize; it is the time spent moving and meeting people from inside and outside the company.
Why Mitsui Fudosan calls itself a "meddlesome landlord"
Why would an office landlord host a sports tournament? Mitsui Fudosan explains the initiative with the phrase "meddlesome landlord" — a landlord that does more than collect rent from tenants and instead stays alongside them after they move in. With remote work firmly established after the pandemic, offices are now asked to offer more than a place to line up desks. So the company made pickleball one of the tools for reshaping the office from a "place to work" into a "place to gather."
Behind that judgment is a real turnout record. Related events involving Mitsui Fudosan drew a cumulative 17,000 people over the six months from April to September 2025. The company-versus-company format was chosen because it delivers two effects at once: team building inside each company, and cross-company exchange on the court. Mitsui Fudosan states the purpose plainly as "supporting the promotion of exchange between companies and the creation of new business opportunities." The bet is that a racket sport can stand in for swapping business cards.
The Sapporo edition is a first step in testing whether the idea travels outside Tokyo. Mitsui's office business also has a base in Sapporo, and this time it brought the same experience to regional office workers, staged in a public plaza in the city center. Does a format that worked in a downtown Tokyo plaza also work within Hokkaido's corporate culture? The opening match of the regional rollout carries the character of a field test.
From 2,000 players to 330,000 — are there enough places to play?
What allows companies to run events like this is the rapid growth in player numbers. Japan's pickleball population stood at roughly 2,000 as of December 2023, but is estimated at about 45,000 in 2025 and about 330,000 in 2026 — close to a sevenfold increase in a single year.The state of pickleball's growth in Japan and what lies aheadshows that this growth is heavily concentrated in the greater Tokyo area, at about 66.5%. Permanent places to play, however, have not kept pace with the growth in participants. Capital investment that connects interest sparked at an event to everyday chances to play is starting to run alongside the events themselves.
One-off events such as the Sapporo company-versus-company match sit at the entrance to that cycle. Will Sapporo teams appear in the final at Nihonbashi Mitsui Hall on November 7, and will this match be followed by other regional cities such as Sendai and Fukuoka?
