"Aiming for inclusion as an additional sport at the 2032 Brisbane Olympics." Sansan, known for its business card management service, has taken up that line as it moves to support Japan's pickleball federation. On July 17, 2026, Sansan announced that it had been named aGrand Slam Partnerof the general incorporated foundation Pickleball Japan. The commitment goes beyond sponsoring tournaments: title sponsorship of the national team, player development and grassroots events for the general public, spanning several layers of the sport from a single company. Mitsui Fudosan and Kenedix joined the same top tier around the same time, and Japanese pickleball has entered a phase where the capital of major companies flows in seriously. For players and facility operators in Japan, this is a signal of whose money will grow the sport.

What a Grand Slam Partner actually means

Grand Slam Partner is the federation's top sponsorship tier. Alongside Sansan, companies including Mitsui Fudosan and Kenedix were in place at the same tier by July 2026. Rather than one company holding it exclusively, several large firms stand side by side supporting the foundations of the sport.

Sansan's commitment breaks into four parts: sponsoring tournaments and events through the year, title sponsorship of the 2026 national team, contributing to player development and national team strengthening, and running taster events and public lessons out of Sansan Pickleball Court Ikebukuro, which the company opened on July 10. What stands out is that one company holds both ends at once, the peak of top-pro development and the base of lessons for people just starting.

Two and a half years of working across every layer of the sport

The appointment is the result of accumulation, not a one-off sponsorship. Sansan began grassroots work in Japan in February 2024, and in 2025 stepped up to full sponsorship of the global top-pro development program Pickleball X along with player sponsorship. In July 2026 it opened what is described as Tokyo's first large dedicated facility, in Ikebukuro, and a week later became the federation's Grand Slam Partner.

The Ikebukuro courts are also the main venue for the corporate team league PX LEAGUE. Six companies including Asics and Mercari own teams and take the wins and losses on themselves (The day six companies own teams, and how Sansan's PX LEAGUE changed the way to take part), and while running that league Sansan also sponsors the federation itself. Its involvement connects venue, competition, players and federation in one vertical line.

Where Japanese pickleball stands now, in numbers

Behind the rush of large companies is rapid growth in the domestic market. One private research firm estimates that the number of players in Japan jumped over the past year.

MetricFigureNotes
Players in Japan (2026)about 330,000Estimate by one private firm; about 7 times the previous year
Players the previous year (2025)about 45,000 peopleSame estimate
Potential player baseabout 11.89 millionRoom to grow of about 36 times the current player base

The figure of about 330,000 players is one private firm's estimate, and it varies with how the base is defined. Even so, growth of about seven times from roughly 45,000 the previous year, and a potential base of 11.89 million, show a market still at the starting line. US growth is cited as a precedent, but the scale differs widely by source. One industry body's 2023 survey put the number who had ever played at about 50 million, while another count estimated about 24.3 million participants in 2025; the number changes with the definition. Either way, this is a phase where whoever plants a flag first tends to take the lead.

Olympic inclusion is a goal, not yet a decision

The line that lands hardest in this news is "added to the program at the 2032 Brisbane Olympics." It deserves to be read precisely. This is a goal the federation has set and a slogan Sansan is putting forward; it is not a decision that pickleball has become an official Olympic sport.

Internationally, hurdles remain. Olympic inclusion requires a single international governing body managing unified rules, and pickleball's international organizations have been split across several bodies. Efforts to consolidate them have continued since 2025, but formal approval from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has not come. The mechanism that lets a host country propose additional sports has precedent, as Japan pushed skateboarding for the 2020 Games, and Australia, where the sport is strong, has room to propose it for 2032. For now, though, it remains one possibility. There is still distance between aiming for it and having it decided.

With that understood, there is value in a sponsor raising the Olympic banner. Give a sport a story with a summit and players, companies and money gather more easily. Naming a destination raises the temperature of the whole market.

How people in Japan should read several large firms supporting the sport

For players and operators in Japan, the point worth reading is the shape itself: not one company but several large ones supporting the top of the sport. In the US, companies have moved ahead in buying the billing of competition, with Amway becoming title sponsor of the pro league MLP (Amway bought the MLP title, so why put its name on the sport's home stage), while in Japan what came first was a line-up of Sansan, Mitsui Fudosan and Kenedix supporting the federation, the governing body, side by side. Rather than buying the naming rights to a particular event, several companies are putting money into the sport's operating base.

That tends to work in the sport's favour. If funding is not concentrated in one company, the risk of the whole sport wobbling on one firm's business decision fades. Stable budgets for running tournaments and strengthening the national team lift exposure as well. For operators who want to widen the base, the next question is how to connect their own business to this corporate pull.

Ripple effects on the industry and market

With big names filling the top tier, companies that follow can see a map of where to place their bets. The summit, meaning national team and pro development and federation sponsorship, has been taken by large firms, but local permanent courts, beginner schools, health programs for seniors, equipment and apparel are still open. On the grassroots side in particular, the format of drawing a crowd at once through taster events is starting to work around the country (A taster festival with up to 24 courts: the Hachioji template for growing pickleball), and sponsoring that kind of activity is within reach of mid-sized and regional companies.

If the federation's budget base thickens, the scale and exposure of tournaments will likely grow further. Whether that exposure can be converted into local footfall, rather than headlines at the summit, is the deciding point for facility operators and schools.

Summary

Sansan's appointment as a Grand Slam Partner marks the point at which Japanese pickleball is supported from the top by several large companies. Olympic inclusion is still a goal, but raising the banner of a summit does the job of warming the whole market. The next move for Japanese operators and school owners is to ride that pull while planting their own flag in the base the big firms did not take: local courts, beginners and seniors, equipment and taster sessions. Start by visiting the Ikebukuro site or a local taster event to see what kind of crowd it draws, and work out which segment your facility or product reaches. Over the next year or two of rapid growth, the segment you establish yourself in will decide where you stand afterwards.
