What began at the Chicago event

The venues were Life Time North Shore and The Picklr Mount Prospect. As Pickleball.com reported on July 22, 74 team battles were scheduled over four days. The names on the entry list capture what this league is. The Palm Beach Royals included Julie Johnson, mother of the siblings JW Johnson and Jorja Johnson; the Los Angeles Extreme included Beth Bellamy, mother of Roscoe Bellamy and a co-founder of the league; and the Suncoast Pelicans listed Jaime Oncins, father of Erik Oncins. Oncins is a former ATP Tour player who competed as a tennis player at the Olympics in Barcelona and Sydney.

In other words, theparents' generationが、同じ週末に、同じ興行の枠内で、自分の名前で試合をしたのだ。

6チームの50代リーグが約4年で3部門に育つまで

The league was founded in 2022 by Beth Bellamy, Michael Chen, and Rick Witsken as the National Pickleball League (NPL). At the start it was only six teams for players 50 and over. Even after a third season it stood at 12 teams and roughly 200 players.

What is new is not that a senior competition exists. Age-group events exist in every country, and there are cases of a former player noticing that no domestic event existed for players over 60 and building one (No Tournament for Over-60s Only -- A Former Player Fills a Gap in Wales). What moved this time is that senior competition picked upclub names, broadcast slots, and a common ratingall at once. Once that much is in place, it is no longer a tournament but a league promotion.

The league's growth in numbers, and the gap with the Japanese market

The Japanese figures come from a survey of about 30,000 people conducted by Pickleball One in March 2026. Against 330,000 players, the group expressing interest numbers 11.89 million. Among people with tennis experience, interest reaches 72.5% (72.5% of tennis players interested, and the 36x headroom in a 330,000-player market)。

How the league and DUPR explained the move

Rod Davis, CEO of the MLP Champions Series, described the PickleballTV deal as a chance to convey both the intensity of the matches and the personalities of individual players. At the announcement of the DUPR partnership he also emphasized the drive and seriousness that players over 50, and now those over 40, bring to the sport.

DUPR CEO Tito Machado said in the same announcement, in substance, that pickleball has shown competitive sport has no upper age limit. From a rating provider's side, being able to quantify players from their 40s to their 60s on one platform adds directly to the depth of its data.

MLP's own March 26 announcement, by contrast, carried no comments from anyone. What it set out was only the brand license and a framework for working together on marketing, promotion, and media. The one concrete item written into it was that three of the 2026 MLP Champions Series events would be staged at MLP main-tour venues. Chicago is the first of those. Including the fact that co-founder Bellamy competes as a player herself, the league is scaling while the distance between management and competitors stays short.

What this brings to players in their 40s and 50s in Japan

Looking at how the sport is growing here, this American development splits clearly into parts that can be imported and parts that cannot.

The hardest to import is the scale of the promotion. Even after expanding to 16 teams, the only published count of players is the roughly 200 from the third season. It is a promotion built on the American advertising market and facility count, and the numbers do not work if it is transplanted to Japan as is.

What can be imported is the design thinking. Cutting divisions in 10-year bands — 40+, 50+, 60+ — makes it easier for entrants to find a bracket where they have a chance of winning. Japanese tournaments are currently organized mainly by skill level, and standing age-group leagues are not in place. With the Japanese federation becoming a JSPO-approved body as of June 24, 2026, the base for putting age categories in place as a system is starting to form.

From a venue operator's view, this group also fills a hole in utilization. The people who can use courts on weekday daytimes are not 30-somethings in the thick of their careers but those in their 50s and above with flexible time. The profitability of a membership indoor facility is decided by how weekday middays get filled. An age-group league is a device that gives those hours a regular reason to exist.

There is also a precedent available by a different route. Taiwan has pushed policy that sends older residents onto courts in the context of preventing the need for nursing care (Why Taiwan is sending seniors to the court, and pickleball as national policy for preventing long-term care). The United States reaches this age group as a promotion, Taiwan as public policy. Japan sits where it can use both entrances. A design that connects municipal health programs with weekday slots at private venues through the same age-group league fits the way the playing population is growing now.

The ripple effects run three ways: equipment, sponsors and broadcasting

For equipment makers, players in their 40s and older are a high-value customer group. They replace paddles less often than younger players, but they can spend more on each one. Major sporting goods makers in Japan have been entering the category one after another, and age-bracket leagues connect directly to that sales route.

The math changes for sponsors too. A sport built around players in their 20s draws beverage brands and streaming services as its main advertisers, but a slot where players in their 40s to 60s take the lead suits high-ticket categories such as insurance, housing, automobiles and travel. Fixing the broadcast in a regular Monday slot also points to an audience with settled viewing habits.

Then there is its value as something to watch. Putting matches between players in their 60s into a continuing broadcast slot is an idea that barely exists in Japanese sports promotion. But if the center of gravity of the playing population sits with middle-aged and older players, footage of people their own age trading shots at a high level carries demand of its own, separate from matches between young top pros. The scale of 20 broadcast matches is also an experiment that tests that hypothesis across a full season.

Takeaway: start by creating a single age-bracket slot

What happened in the United States is that senior competition stopped being welfare programming or a club hobby and became a promotion with franchises, ratings and broadcast slots. Japan does not need to aim for that scale right away. The work to be done sits much earlier than that.

If you run a facility, try putting one regular weekday-afternoon slot limited to players aged 50 and over. If you run tournaments, add one age-bracket division at your next event and compare entry numbers and re-entry rates. If you are a player, get a DUPR ID and start recording your number. Without a numerical picture of how ability is distributed by age, there is no basis for splitting divisions at all.
