Why an apparel brand puts up prize money for a Vietnamese tournament judged on looks

Food stalls line the side of the court, and players compete under lights and music. Held at a resort in southern Vietnam, Mr & Miss Pickleball Vietnam 2026 was a sporting contest and at the same timean advertising stagewhere brands came to buy the eyes of the crowd. The name on the sponsor board belonged, unexpectedly, to BrilliA, an apparel and footwear brand. Why do companies put money in this early, into a market whose playing population is still hard to read? The case is not somebody else's business for Japanese food and household-goods makers.

The tournament was held at Ho Tram, a resort near Ho Chi Minh City. Built around team competition in men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed, it also offered individual crowns, as the name suggests: “Mr Pickleball” and “Miss Pickleball”. Team Elite Star won the title. In the individual awards, Valentin Tran and Pham Thi Anh Vuong were each named champion and took home 50 million VND (about 290,000 yen). The program also included an exhibition by Vietnamese player Sophia Phuong Anh (16, who played tennis as a child and switched after a shoulder injury, winning three titles at the Vietnam Pickleball Awards 2025), making the event a spectacle as much as a competition.

Brands crowding into a fast-growing Southeast Asian market

Vietnamese pickleball has widened its base fast over the past two years. Tennis courts and vacant lots in cities have been converted into courts, and both the number of tournaments and the number of entrants keep climbing. Equipment costs less than tennis or badminton and the rules are easier to learn. That low barrier to entry drove the sport into the urban youth market in a short time. BrilliA CEO Kendrew Hartanto called Vietnam one of the most dynamic pickleball markets in Southeast Asia. The brand's intent to carve its name in before the market settles shows through.

Brands move early because the cost-benefit flips. Buy a sponsorship slot after a sport has gone national and the price jumps while you are buried as a latecomer. In a growth phase, the same exposure is cheaper, and you also get the story of having backed the sport from early on. BrilliA's move is position-taking in a market where the winners are not yet decided.

What is worth noting is that the sponsor was not a paddle or shoe specialist but a fashion-leaning brand. It is not buying sales of competition gear; it is buying the young, photogenic players who gather at the event and the path their photos take across social media. This is the idea of using sport asan advertising mediumとして使う発想であり、食品や雑貨のメーカーが横入りできる余白がここにある。

Prize breakdown and yen conversion

Prize money was distributed to both individuals and teams. Conversions use a guide of about 170 VND to the yen (actual rates move). The winning team's share alone tops 400 million VND, a generous structure for a regional event.

Three parties, three agendas

The people behind this tournament had clearly different aims depending on where they stood. The brand planted its flag at the entrance to the market. Hartanto's description of a market with momentum doubles as a public statement backing up the investment decision. The less settled a market is, the greater the value of locking in exposure early.

The organizers pushed the sport toward being fun to watch. Event director Joshua Turner assembled not just match results but a single experience folding in music, lighting and food. It was designed less as a pure competition than as a show meant to satisfy spectators and sponsors alike.

For the players and performers, prize money and exposure worked together. The exhibition featuring top tennis players served as a bridge pulling fans of established sports toward pickleball. The Mr & Miss format, which built photogenic appeal into the judging alongside playing ability, also became a stage for raising the players' brand value.

What this means for Japanese food, housewares and novelty companies

The setup holds lessons for small and midsize Japanese manufacturers. A pickleball tournament lets a company make its presence felt through an on-site booth or giveaways, without buying the kind of expensive slot a TV commercial requires. The crowd at these venues is health-conscious with disposable income, which suits sampling and handouts of food, drinks and household goods. Even industries with no connection to sporting equipment can slip in naturally as part of the spectator experience. Handing a recovery snack to someone who has just worked up a sweat, setting up a display people want to photograph — contact like this leaves a memory of an experience that shelf space alone cannot buy.

The key is a shift in perspective: seeing a tournament as abrand touchpoint. Rather than stopping at a logo on a banner, a company that designs the whole package — the recovery snacks handed out during breaks, the original goods given to winners, the fixtures that end up in the photos — can stay in people's memory even on a small sponsorship budget. Participation is growing in Japan too, and it is easy to picture local food makers lending their names to regional tournaments. In Vietnam, cases likethe tournament in Da Nang that drew 1,600 entrepreneursshow courts functioning as venues for deal-making and networking.

Sport and brands, rippling outward

Using the sport as a vehicle for advertising is not limited to Vietnam. Takethe Kellogg's case, where a major food company put its brand on a team name: sponsorships chasing stomachs and player numbers at once are on the rise worldwide. In foregrounding entertainment, it also rhymes withthe festival in Kuching, which put the sport on the same bill as cosplay and K-pop. Now that pickleball has become something to watch, photograph and talk about, there is room for industries outside sporting goods to move in.

Practical notes for companies weighing a sponsorship

If you are considering a sponsorship, put the quality of the contact ahead of the scale. Regional tournaments often let a company put its name up for a few tens of thousands of yen, so the realistic first step is to gauge the reaction at a single event. For handouts, recovery items consumed during play and practical goods people take home work on both counts, photo appeal and repeat use. Swapping part of the prize money for an assortment of your own products is another way to hold costs down while gaining exposure. For measurement, decide in advance on figures you can trace afterward, such as the number of tagged social posts or the share of samples used up at the venue, and the next event becomes easier to plan.

Summary

Mr & Miss Pickleball Vietnam 2026 was a clear case of competition, entertainment and brand strategy sharing one stage. The apparel brand put up the prize money to plant its flag before the market hardens. For Japanese food, housewares and novelty companies too, a fast-growing sport can work as an advertising medium you can enter cheaply. Whether a sponsorship pays off comes down to whether you can design the spectator experience itself rather than settling for a logo on a banner.
