Major League Pickleball (MLP), the American pro league, has launched an Asian edition, and its first international draft wrapped up by September 14. Players were distributed among teams representing six countries and regions, and Japan-based Team Tokyo was formed. Yuta Funamizu, one of Japan's top players, was named captain. The opening match is set for November 13 in Japan, so pro competition in Asia is no longer a story from across the ocean. For players in Japan, it adds one more way to watch world-class team competition on home courts.

Players from around the world spread across six national teams

The draft was where each team secured players for MLP Asia's first season. The six taking part are China's Dragon Warriors, the Hong Kong Cannons, Malaysia's Malayan Stripes, the Manila Helios of the Philippines, Japan's Team Tokyo and Vietnam's Viet Panthers. Players active in North America were also eligible, so world-ranked names appear on Asian league rosters.

The headline pick was first overall: 15-year-old Tama Shimabukuro went to Vietnam's Viet Panthers. A young player with ties to Japan joining a Vietnamese side rather than the Japanese team shows this is a competition where squads are built on team strategy rather than nationality. Team Tokyo, led by Funamizu, put its roster together amid the contest over that first pick.

The MLP Asia draft is not a simple pick order. Before each round, teams bid an amount, and the team bidding highest picks first. Across all three rounds, each team has to decide which players to back heavily with a limited budget. Go hard for one strong player, or spread thin to fill several slots? How the money is used shows how well a squad is put together.

The format carries over the bidding draft MLP has run in North America. For a pro team's management, how players are priced and how the budget is spread feeds straight into the standings. For viewers, who went where and for how much becomes one of the things to follow. What combinations Team Tokyo, built around Funamizu, will field by the opener is the question for fans in Japan.

What the bidding draft reveals about each country's aims

For Japan, the fact that a home-based pro team has officially raised its flag is a milestone in itself. In a sport with many converts from tennis and table tennis, having a player of Funamizu's caliber out front as captain carries weight. It shows anyone taking up the sport a clear level to aim for.

Worth noting is how actively Vietnam and Hong Kong picked ranked North American players. Vietnam taking the 15-year-old Shimabukuro first overall reads as a signal that Asian teams have moved from developing players to buying them to win.

From an equipment and facility standpoint, the big effect is a league running on a fixed schedule. Unlike one-off tournaments, demand for venues and spectators can be read across a season, so court operators and sponsors can plan their investment.

What changes for players and the industry in Japan

The most direct change this league brings to fans in Japan is the chance to watch world-class team play at home. Watching used to mean following individual players on overseas trips; in November it moves to a court in Japan. With Funamizu as the face at the center of the team, a culture of supporting a leading player can take hold more easily.

For coaches and facility operators, pro matches close to home mean more teaching material. Seeing top players' positioning and the exchanges at the kitchen line in person makes lessons more convincing. Moves to raise the sport's profile have continued, as withthe TV segment Yuta Funamizu went undercover for in disguise, but a league becomes the base that turns that heat into a regular watching habit.

For young players with ambitions, Shimabukuro's first-overall pick set a benchmark.Winning the mixed doubles in Shenzhen at 15led to the highest-priced pick by a pro team, and results in international events now feed straight into market value.

A six-nation league pulls Asia's center of gravity in further

The launch of MLP Asia accelerates the shift of the sport's center of gravity toward Asia. The growth in Asia that DUPR's data showshas pointed to rapid rises in South Korea, Malaysia and Vietnam, and adding a pro league on top connects that growing playing population to watching and earning. Japan being in the six from the start is no small thing.

From a business angle, a league on a fixed schedule is leverage in sponsorship and broadcast talks. Exposure is easier to plan than at one-off tournaments, and a regional team brand draws local corporate backing. How far Japan's Team Tokyo can build attendance and sponsorship will decide how much the league expands from its second year.

Dates and questions to note before the opener

The other question is whether a Japan-based pro team can keep running as a business. Venue size, ticket sales, the local sponsors on the board: these are the measures for the first season. The clearest way to keep the sport's heat from being a passing phase is to go as a spectator. Once the venue for the opener is announced, watching one match live is worth doing.
