Just lay down the lines: TOCO's 2kg kit turns a gym into an instant court

TOCO, the pickleball brand run by Bs Inc. of Higashiosaka, Osaka Prefecture, released the COURT LINE KIT on August 6, 2026. The reference price is 16,500 yen including tax, and it weighs about 2kg. Lay the eight separate lines on the floor and a corner of a gymnasium or tennis court becomes a pickleball court. For players in Japan who secure space by renting gym time because dedicated courts are scarce, this is a product that turns setup speed itself into the selling point.

TOC

Eight independent lines you simply lay down, freeing setup from repeated measuring

Until now the usual way to mark a court on the floor was rolled line tape. Tape means cutting a single strip each time and re-laying it while measuring. The COURT LINE KIT divides that strip in advance into the shape of each side and each line, making eight independent pieces. The maker says setup works by "cutting out the work of measuring and placing one piece at a time," and that the court shape appears by "simply laying pieces along the guides."

The other selling point is that it does not tangle. Tape and cord-style markers tangle every time you pull them out of storage, and untangling costs time. With eight separate pieces, spreading them out and folding them up stays simple. Time is cut at both setup and takedown.

The official release does state, however, that corners and similar points are secured loosely with masking tape. It is not a case of laying it down and being finished; the step of keeping it from shifting remains. This is worth noting without overstating it.

6.32m × 13.63m laid out, fitting a gymnasium or tennis court as is

Laid out, the size is W632cm × D1363cm, with a thickness of 0.01cm. Pickleball's official playing area is 6.10m × 13.41m (net 86cm at the center), about the same as a badminton doubles court. The kit's outer edge is only about 22cm larger in each direction, so it fits a footprint that adds a slim margin outside an official court.

That sense of scale is easiest to picture as a gymnasium floor already marked for badminton, or the space of one tennis court. One tennis court is wide enough for about four pickleball courts, and a gym's badminton court can be used as is. Stored, it folds down to W39cm × D43cm × H8cm, and about 2kg travels in a dedicated bag. The assumption that you re-measure the whole court with a tape measure at every setup falls apart with that portability. How to find courts and facilities nationwidealongside that, it is worth thinking through how to use the space you have.

Why 2kg of portability matters in a country where half of respondents play in public gymnasiums

Why does setup speed matter? In the market survey Pickle One published in 2026, the current playing population is estimated at about 330,000 and the latent layer at about 11.89 million. Asked in the same survey where they play (multiple answers), 49.5% said public gymnasiums, 37.9% tennis courts and 30.1% dedicated courts. Most players are juggling space by renting shared facilities by the hour.

Shared facilities have limited booking slots and compete with other sports for them. If you can get two hours, whatever goes into setup and takedown comes straight out of playing time. Suppose measuring and laying tape strip by strip, then peeling it off afterward, takes 15 minutes each way: that is a quarter of a two-hour slot gone. If laying down and folding eight pieces shortens the work at both ends, more of the same slot goes to rallies. TOCO's line about "securing more of your valuable playing time" sits on top of this hourly-rental reality. Japan's state of adoption and its outlook are summarized inour piece on pickleball's spread in Japan and the outlook ahead.

How it differs from tape and spot markers, and the 16,500 yen price

There are already a few types of tool for making an instant court. One is rolled line tape, cheaper but with adhesive that wears out and re-laying that takes work. Another is spot markers placed at corners and intersections, dozens of points scattered to mark the key spots. Because point markers leave the lines discontinuous, in-and-out calls wobble by eye.

The COURT LINE KIT keeps continuous lines while splitting them into pieces, aiming at the middle ground between re-laying tape and the hard calls that come with spots. At 16,500 yen including tax, the up-front cost is higher than disposable tape, but seen as a durable item used over and over, the impression depends on how you value skipping the re-laying and the consumables. For a facility or club using it several times a week, the cost per session thins out with use. A look atthe equipment to get first and how to choose it, which covers balls and shoes as well, is also useful for estimating the cost of getting started.

Where it fits at facilities and local events, and what to check before buying

The release lists the benefits as providing courts in gymnasiums and multi-purpose spaces without permanent lines, coexisting with courts for other sports and restoring the space afterward, and drawing people at taster sessions and local events. It suits settings for trying it once, such as school recreation or municipal taster sessions. TOCO carries the brand concept "With Your Steps." and says it will push adoption in Japan alongside paddles and apparel.

What to check before buying is how it works with the floor. Because fixing relies on masking tape at the corners, slippery floors or windy outdoor spots need a separate plan against shifting. The color is orange and the model number is TPL-101-OR. The material is not stated in the release, so depending on the flooring it is safer to test a small section before the real thing. Check how the lines sit on your own gym floor once, then take it to a taster session or event.
