The first World Cup staged outside the Americas, where pickleball was born — India's national team is taking shape ahead of the Pickleball World Cup 2026, running August 30 to September 6 in Da Nang, Vietnam. On July 3, Picklebay, an Indian company built entirely around a pickleball platform, announced that it had taken on the role ofPowered By Sponsorfor India's Open and Junior national teams. A startup barely a year past founding is now backing an entire national squad. Running the selection events, supplying the backbone of the sanctioned rankings, developing courts, and now supporting the national team — one private company in India is handling the sport's commercial infrastructure end to end, and for Japan, still in its domestic-adoption phase, that offers a yardstick for how fast a market can mature.
Picklebay named "Powered By Sponsor" of India's World Cup team
The announcement came on July 3, 2026. Picklebay will back both India's Open and Junior squads at the Pickleball World Cup 2026, an international competition contested between countries. Founder and CEO Siddhant Jatia commented: "Our focus has always been on growing this sport by creating more opportunities for players and making pickleball accessible to everyone. Supporting both India's Open and Junior teams at one of the world's biggest international events is a proud moment for us."
This is the fourth edition, following three previous stagings in Peru and the United States, and the first ever held in Asia. Local reports put the expected turnout at about 4,000 participants from 80 countries and regions, with play at the Tien Son Sports Center and other venues around Da Nang. India named its junior squad in June and will head to Da Nang in both the Open and Junior divisions.
Who is this one-year-old, self-funded "specialist platform"
Picklebay launched in May 2025. Rather than raising outside capital, Jatia started it with his own money. He is a fourth-generation entrepreneur from a business family 120 years old, and in an interview with the founder-interview outlet Founder Thesis he laid out a model that bundles court search, tournament entry, and a player community into a single app. Line up the numbers he gave there and the shape of the business comes into view.
| Item | Figure (from Jatia's public interview) |
|---|---|
| Launch | May 2025 (founded with his own capital) |
| Listed courts | About 650-700 courts (verified on the ground across 7 Indian cities) |
| Inquiries for court construction consulting | About 750 courts' worth |
| Player community | More than 10,000 on WhatsApp |
| In-house systems | Tournament management system (TMS) running; venue management system (VMS) due to roll out in mid-2026 |
| Total courts in India | About 2,500 (more than 500 in Ahmedabad alone) |
| For reference: courts in the United States | More than 50,000 |
What stands out is the economics on the facility side. According to Jatia, building one court in India costs 500,000 to 700,000 rupees (roughly 900,000 to 1.3 million yen, converted at about 1.8 yen per rupee here and throughout); a four-court venue takes in 900,000 to 1 million rupees a month (about 1.6 to 1.8 million yen), leaves 300,000 to 350,000 rupees (about 550,000 to 650,000 yen) after expenses, and pays back the investment in 8 to 10 months. Land and labor costs differ, so the figures do not transfer straight to Japan, but it is precisely because the market pays back a build in under a year that a specialist startup can stand up without leaning on ad revenue.
From selection events to rankings to team backing — one company holding the whole chain
Reading this sponsorship as a one-off ad buy misses the point. From June 24 to 28, Picklebay ran its own event, Picklebay Zonals – North, at The Horizon x Courtplay in Gurugram. It carried a total prize pool of 1.5 million rupees (about 2.7 million yen) and PWR700 status sanctioned by the Indian Pickleball Association (IPA), and it was designated an official selection event for India's Open squad.
In other words, the company runs the tournament that picks the national team, supplies the backbone of the sanctioned ranking that tournament feeds, and sponsors the squad that comes out of it — three roles under one roof. Add court search and booking plus the tournament management system, and it starts to look close tovertical integrationof the sport's commercial infrastructure. The pace of growth is striking, but questions remain over how heavily the sport leans on a single company, and how the conflict of interest is managed when the organizer of a selection event is also a sponsor. That is where the IPA's governance design will be tested.
Reaction on the ground and in the industry
The comments and coverage that followed the announcement show this deal being treated as more than a sports story.
- When the selection event was designated, CEO Jatia said what India needs is structured tournaments, a ranking people can trust, quality infrastructure, and a clear growth path for players, framing national team support as part of the company's wider plan.
- IPA president Suryaveer Singh Bhullar said Picklebay "has set the gold standard in running India's premier tournaments" — an unusual comment from the head of a federation singling out a private company by name.
- It is telling that the first outlets to give the announcement heavy coverage were not sports media but advertising and marketing trades: adgully, MediaNews4U, and Impact. In India, pickleball sponsorships have reached the stage where they are reported as marketing investments.
The IPA has also unveiled new national team jerseys for the World Cup, and local coverage suggests the commercial packaging of the squad is coming together steadily.
What Japan's pickleball community should take from this
Corporate money has started flowing in Japan too.the domestic move that sat Dentsu and Asics at the same tablewas the starting gun for turning the sport into infrastructure, and withstreaming company 17LIVE signing three pros and stepping into tournaments, companies backing individual players have appeared as well. In every case, though, these are firms with a separate core business taking part as an extension of marketing or business synergy.
India's setup differs in kind. There are companies whose business is running the sport itself — courts, bookings, tournaments, rankings — and national team support sits at the end of that business. Sponsorship is not an advertising expense butreinvestment in its own market. Because growth in participation feeds straight back into company revenue, this structure makes support less likely to break off when the economy turns or a staffer moves on.
There are three lessons for Japan. First, the seat for a pickleball-specific platform bundling court booking, tournament management, and rankings is still empty here. Facilities are multiplying, but bookings run mostly through general-purpose systems inherited from tennis or manual sign-ups over social media, and nobody has locked down that layer. Second, how quickly a market reaches the point where junior support works as an investment.teenagers turned up at the Tokyo Open— and as that showed, junior development across Asia has already moved into a competitive phase, with India accelerating it on private money. Third, India's measured payback of 8 to 10 months on facility investment gives Japanese operators a benchmark for checking their own business plans. Under Japanese conditions, where payback tends to run longer, the model Picklebay practices — bundling software and customer acquisition into the facility — may be more repeatable than running courts on their own.
Wrap-up — looking beyond the scoreboard in Da Nang
Here is the World Cup at a glance.
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Tournament Name | Pickleball World Cup 2026 (4th edition) |
| Run | August 30 to September 6, 2026 |
| Location | Da Nang, Vietnam (Tien Son Sports Center and other venues) |
| Scale | About 4,000 participants expected from 80 countries and regions |
| Of note | アジア初開催 |
In host country Vietnam, banks and consumer goods companies have lined up one after another behind the event, while India is sending a specialist platform along with its national team. The Da Nang World Cup looks set to become a showcase of Asian commercial models, a place to compare at a glance who is bankrolling the sport in each country. Facility operators in Japan should study Picklebay's facility economics and its software-bundling strategy. Readers working in sports business should watch the sponsor lineups behind each national team. Officials at governing bodies can get ahead by learning from India how selection events and private sponsors are wired together — this is a tournament with as much to learn outside the scoreboard as in the results themselves.
