From July 16 to 19, Martha's Vineyard, the summer retreat off the coast of Massachusetts, will host the island's first exhibition matches by professional players along with a camp for adults. The venue is Airport Fitness, a local fitness facility. The invited pros include Oscar Serra, ranked No. 1 in both singles and doubles in Italy, and the organizer is coach Cobi Moore. For enthusiasts living on an island of about 20,000 people, this will be the first chance to watch professionals play in person. Participation is still at the entry stage and permanent facilities are limited — conditions that overlap with clubs in rural Japan and on its islands. How does a place with no chance to watch professionals draw top players in?The case in Kobe where a permanent court in the provinces invited a nine-time US championshows the same structure playing out here one size smaller, and the two are worth reading together.

Four days in which pros hit on the island for the first time

Why they timed it to the 30th anniversary

The project was led by Moore, an outside coach, together with Ryan, the Airport Fitness pro, Michael Reidboard, and owner McHugh and her family. It pairs an organizer brought in from outside with operators who run the courts locally every day. Moore said that "if you can combine high-level instruction with a memorable place like Martha's Vineyard, that alone makes it a special opportunity," which shows that the appeal of a summer retreat is itself a recruiting tool for the players. The side inviting the pros has more to offer than prize money.

What the organizers' words reveal about the aim

Line up what the people behind the project have said and it is clear that drawing a crowd is not the only goal.

  • Moore (organizing coach) — "If you can combine high-level instruction with a memorable place, it becomes a special opportunity." He puts the quality of the coaching and the appeal of the place forward as a set
  • Local operators — the camps use small groups, and the first two sessions filled up first. Spectating and paid on-court instruction are designed as separate pieces

The pro exhibition is not left as a spectacle; while the heat is still on, it funnels people into a camp capped at 16. Watching and hitting are set up to alternate inside the same four days. The case of the sport reaching a school on an island in the Seto Inland Seapoints the same way: pros and coaches moving to carry the game out to remote places has already begun in Japan.

Three design points clubs in rural Japan and on its islands can take home

For operators in places with no chance to watch pros, this island's project works as a concrete blueprint. There are three key points.

First,Preparing something other than prize money to attract playersis the first. Martha's Vineyard turned its fame as a summer retreat straight into a card for inviting pros. Rural Japan and its islands have their own reasons to make a trip worth it: hot spring towns, scenery, food. Instead of matching the cities on total prize money, putting forward the value of a place players actually want to visit lowers the bar for an invitation.

Second,Riding on a facility milestone or an existing drawis the second design point. Here the exhibition was hung on the 30th anniversary of the facility's opening. Standing an event up from nothing makes both promotion and budget heavy, but attaching the sport to an existing draw — an anniversary, a renovation, a local festival — spreads the promotion cost. The side inviting the pros does not have to shoulder all the risk alone.

Third,Bundling watching and hitting into one scheduleis the third, and it is where the money comes from. Drawing a crowd with a near-free exhibition and steering that interest, while it is still hot, into a paid camp capped at 16 is a two-stage structure that a small staff can run. Set against a regional clubtaking on a pro as a local development corps member and building them into its outreach, this is a one-off event format and travels light. Even without the means to keep a coach on staff, bringing in an outside pro for a short run is something a small club can try.

Wrap-up: what to check so the first time is not the last

An island that has never seen a pro pulls off its first pro exhibition by timing it to a facility anniversary. What this shows is that recruiting top players is not the privilege of big cities and big money alone. Operators in Japan should check three things next. First, whether the island's first event stays a one-off or grows into an annual fixture. Second, how far the sellout of a small camp can be repeated, which is to say how deep demand for paid instruction really runs. Third, taking stock of what in their own area would make a player want to make the trip. Start by opening the calendar of local anniversaries and tourism assets and looking for a slot where an exhibition could be dropped in.
