Host Vietnam takes 106 golds, ten times runner-up Korea, to sweep the Da Nang World Cup

The Heineken Pickleball World Cup 2026, which decides the world's best in pickleball, ran from August 30 to September 6 in central Vietnam, inDa Nang. Through the fifth day of competition, host nation Vietnam had piled up 106 golds and 244 medals in total, putting it more than ten times clear of second-placed South Korea on golds. To anyone playing in Japan it may look like a tournament in a distant country, but the figure shows how large a playing population these emerging Asian nations have gathered. For Japanese venue operators and tournament organizers weighing their next move, it is material that cannot be ignored.

106 golds and 244 medals: five days the host nation dominated

According to the Vietnamese paper Tuoi Tre, Vietnam led by a distance with 106 golds as of day five. South Korea was second with 10 and the United States third with 9, and the report noted that Vietnam's gold total equaled the combined golds of every other participating country and territory. Vietnam also reached 244 medals in total. The tournament ran from August 30 to September 6 across seven venues in Da Nang.

That is the tailwind of competing at home, not a claim that Vietnam is the strongest in the world. Tuoi Tre itself noted that the lopsided figures reflect the host nation's larger allocation of entry places and the thick pool of players at home. Put the other way, Vietnam has enough registered players to fill every place it is given.

2 South Korea 10
3 United States 9

5,000 players and 78 countries registered: how it reached Guinness-record scale

More than 5,000 players entered, with 78 countries and territories registered and 65 taking part. It has been certified by Guinness World Records as the pickleball tournament with the most participating countries and territories. Heineken was the title sponsor, and the event was designed as a full package, with cultural exchange, training programs, and a World Market retail section alongside the competition.

Matches totaled about 8,500, working out at roughly 1,000 a day. The National category pitted 156 teams across five divisions, Open 64, Senior 40, Master 20, Junior 16, and Kids 16, and the individual events were split finely by level and category. Slicing age groups and skill levels this thin reflects a philosophy of creating somewhere to play first and worrying about winning and losing second.

The volume came from how finely the divisions were cut

The 106 golds are inseparable from that division of categories. Multiply age, level, and mixed formats and the number of categories grows, and with it the number of medal slots. Vietnam could put a deep field into every division from kids to masters, so it collected golds in proportion to the slots available. It is not the top rank of the sport but the breadth of its base converted directly into a medal count.

Build the seats and they fill: the lesson in Vietnam's player base

What players and venue operators in Japan should read is what Vietnam's strength is made of. Pickleball only spread widely in Vietnam over the past year or two, and the governing Vietnam Pickleball Federation is said to have been founded only months before the tournament. Even so, it drew entries on a 5,000-player scale from the home crowd and filled every division from kids to masters. It is not the length of the competitive history but a design that lowered the barrier to entry that produced those numbers.

Taster sessions in Japan have proved their drawing power in region after region, and sessions that take far more applications than they have places are hardly rare. Lay out the seats and latent demand comes to the surface. What Da Nang pulled off at national scale was bundling the route from taster session to registration to tournament, division by division. What Japanese organizers can learn is the order: lay down the divisions that catch kids, seniors, and beginners before running the tournament for advanced players.

An operating plan that splits the event across seven venues

To get through 1,000 matches a day, Da Nang spread the tournament over seven venues around the city. Rather than concentrating it in one large arena, it used a cluster of existing sports facilities across an area. With permanent courts in short supply in urban Japan, tying several nearby facilities together for the run of a tournament is more realistic than adding courts at a single site. If a hub like the one that opened inside a shopping complex in Inagi,Japan's first permanent indoor court, is used as the core and neighboring facilities are linked as temporary venues, the barrier of scale comes down.

How far will Asia's playing population grow

Da Nang's numbers are part of a shift in the sport's center of gravity, spreading from a North America-only base into Asia. In Taiwan, the pro leagueAEPL launched in Taichungin August, and Vietnam has produced a home-grown paddle brand built around its local star Quang Duong. Growth in the playing population is standing up all three layers of an industry at once, tournaments, pro leagues, and equipment makers, and it is happening in parallel across Asian countries.

For Japan, this wave feeds back into import prices and paddle supply. As Asian brands build a production record, a market once dominated by North American brands gains options. From a player's point of view, more tournaments in Asia also shift the bar for competing abroad toward nearby countries, where time differences and airfares are smaller.

How Japan did, and what it can do next

On the competitive side of the same Da Nang tournament, the United States won the team title in the National category and Japan reached the world semifinals. That Japan held its own near the top, on an axis separate from the host nation's sheer volume, is covered in detail in ourclosing report. It tends to be buried under the impact of the medal table, but a small squad breaking into the upper rounds shows that Japan is at a stage where technique is making up for a thin player base.

Flip that around and what Japan lacks is the thick base. The registration foundation Vietnam assembled in months, Japan has built only one taster session at a time. The concrete next move is to bundle those one-off sessions into leagues by division. Run standing leagues for kids, seniors, beginners, and intermediates at the local level, with taster sessions as the way in. Reproduce at city or ward scale the order Da Nang demonstrated at national scale, and Japan's playing population will grow by the number of seats it lays out.
