Long-awaited gold at home in Ho Chi Minh City as Vietnam delivers at PPA Asia

At the PPA Asia 500 MB Ho Chi Minh City Open 2026, held August 6–9 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, the local pair of Hien Truong and Quang Do won the men's doubles. At an international event in Asia where overseas players usually fill the top places, a host-country pair stood on the highest step. For Japan, having just staged its own PPA Asia 500 in Tachikawa, Tokyo in July, a neighboring country's example of winning at home carries weight.

The story belongs to Hien Truong. According to initial reports, he had spent the season finishing silver, bronze and silver at events in his own country, always a step short of the top, with gold on home courts the one thing missing. Sunday in Ho Chi Minh City ended that run. In the men's doubles final, Truong and partner Quang Do came from behind to beat Hoang Nam Ly and Collin Johns 11-13, 11-6, 11-4. They dropped the first game, then rebuilt through the second and third.

大会は5種目で争われた。ベトナムが頂点に立ったのは男子ダブルスの1種目だが、決勝進出者の顔ぶれを見ると、開催国は複数の種目で最後まで残っている。

女子シングルスのチャン・フインは決勝で敗れて銀。男子ダブルスでは金のチュオン&ドーに続き、準優勝ペアにもホアン・ナム・リーが名を連ねた。男子シングルス準優勝のルック・ファムはベトナム系だが競技登録はアメリカであり、ベトナムの選手が決勝まで残ったのは男子ダブルスと女子シングルスの2種目になる。それでも金1つという数字以上に、開催国の層の厚みが見える大会だった。女子シングルスを制したディコサヴリェヴィッチは、女子ダブルスでも中国のユーフェイ・ロンと組んで優勝し、この大会の二冠に輝いている。

Second Vietnam stop for the PPA Asia 500, with a circuit spreading to Tokyo, Beijing and KL

This Ho Chi Minh City event was the second stop the PPA Tour Asia held in Vietnam in 2026, following the Hanoi event that year. The Asian circuit also reaches Tokyo, Kuala Lumpur, Macau, Singapore and Beijing, and organizers said this event alone drew more than 500 players from over 20 countries and regions. Total prize money was US$70,000 with 500 ranking points. At 150 yen to the dollar, the purse comes to roughly 10.5 million yen.

The venue was City Park inside The Global City, a new urban center in Ho Chi Minh City. Alongside outdoor courts built to international specifications, an air-conditioned arena was prepared. That the North American PPA now brings an operation this size to prime land in a Southeast Asian city shows Asian pickleball starting to work as a spectator and commercial product.

ホーチミンでベトナム選手が地元開催の金を取ったことは、同じ「アジアに自前のストップを持つ国」の日本にとって現実的な目標を映し出す。船水雄太や畠山成冴といった日本のプロも同じPPAアジアのドローで戦っており、東京というホームコートで頂点を狙える環境は整いつつある。左利きのJapanese pro like Seisa Hatakeyamacan climb on the Asian circuit — the Ho Chi Minh City result is the yardstick for that.

There is something to learn on court too. Truong's pair dropped the first game 11-13, then raised the accuracy of their returns and serves from the second game on to open the scoring at 11-6 and 11-4. That sense for regrouping after breaking down once against stronger opponents is something competitive players in Japan can work on in practice.

What one win in Ho Chi Minh City leaves behind
