Two courts on the second basement floor of the Shibuya Tobu Hotel, grand opening August 8
The venue is the second basement floor of the Shibuya Tobu Hotel at 3-1 Udagawacho, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo, which stands along Shibuya Koen-dori. A pre-opening ran from August 1 to 7, with the grand opening on August 8. There are two courts, and hours are planned for 12:00 to 22:00. Bookings are taken through a dedicated page on Reserva.
The launch splits across two companies. Shinka Inc. was contracted by Tobu Hotel Management and handles facility management and operations as a joint partner. MIC FIELD Inc. handles the design of the space and the experience, the creative side. One runs the place, the other builds how it looks. The heads are Tomohiko Hisada at Shinka and Tomoya Mikuni at MIC FIELD.

"First in Japan" comes with conditions: inside a hotel, with permanent neon
The announcement bills the venue as "the first permanent pickleball facility in Japan to use neon production." There is a caveat attached, however, reading "as a pickleball facility inside a hotel with permanent neon production (according to MIC FIELD Inc., as of July 2026)." In other words, the pickleball venue itself is not a first for Japan; the claim is about being an indoor court inside a hotel with permanent neon. It is the operators' own claim, and reading it without those conditions as "Japan's first pickleball facility" misses what it actually is.
The production combines court lines that glow under black light, glowing pickleballs, and a space wrapped in neon light. The design leans toward the picture the darkness makes rather than the play itself. Read it as a pitch aimed less at serious competitors than at people walking through Shibuya who stop and think they want to try it.
閉館を控えたホテルの空室を、期間限定で回す戦略
What makes this project work is that the venue is a hotel about to close. The Shibuya Tobu Hotel opened in 1975 with 205 rooms, and in November 2025 it was announced that operations would end around the end of February 2027. The lease is expiring, and the site is part of the Jinnan 2-chome and Udagawacho redevelopment block. The context is how a hotel closing 50 years of history spends its last stretch of time.
NEON PICKLEBALL CLUB runs "through the end of February 2027," almost exactly matching the hotel's final day. Rather than leaving the rooms idle before demolition and redevelopment begin, they are put to work as a court. The announcement states plainly that it is "part of a project to make use of the hotel's vacant space." This is not investing in a permanent facility; it is using up an asset fully within a fixed deadline.
In urban areas where securing land is hard, this kind of fixed-term use becomes a realistic option. Theconversion of the Inagi Frespo Wakabadai courts into a permanent installationthat we covered earlier was a suburban mall case where a temporary setup measured demand before switching to a permanent one. Shibuya runs the other way, setting the court's lifespan in advance to match the building's remaining time. It shows that use built on no assumption of permanence can work even on prime urban land.
330,000 players but only 30% on dedicated courts: not enough places to play
Why does even a hotel basement become a court? Behind it is how thin Japan's playing environment is. In a survey of 30,000 general consumers aged 15 to 79 conducted by Pickleball One Inc. in March 2026, the estimated number of players in Japan was about 330,000. Meanwhile, potential players with an interest were estimated at about 11.89 million, roughly 36 times the current figure. Against the number of people who want to play, places are decisively short.
In the same survey, about half of players (49.5%) played in public gymnasiums. Only 30% (30.1%) played on dedicated courts. Public gyms mean competing with other sports for bookings, which limits playing time. Unless dedicated capacity grows, much of that latent interest will stay stuck waiting for a gym slot. Whether in a hotel basement or a corner of a shopping complex, adding permanently available courts works to clear that bottleneck.

Dropping a court into Shibuya at night, a play built on experience
The Shibuya location and the neon aim at something other than a practice hall. The announcement describes the venue with phrases like "a new nightspot in Shibuya" and "sport × entertainment × culture." Play a match on a glowing court and take photos, after work or around drinks. It is designed for people who come for the experience rather than the standard of play.
Pickleball keeps rallies going and the rules are simple, so even first-timers get absorbed in it. As noted earlier in the article examiningpickleball's sense of immersion through flow theory, this ease of entry suits a product built around experience. Add the look of black light and the barrier to a first try drops further. Overseas, the idea of building attendance ahead of time rather than waiting for a facility to be finished is spreading too, as witha mall-adjacent court in Canada that drew more than 1,000 people to a state championship in its opening week. In Shibuya's case, the draw is built on night and light rather than a tournament.
Using up a closing building's six months with two courts
NEON PICKLEBALL CLUB is not a permanent facility. It is simply a project to light up two courts on the second basement floor for whatever time the Shibuya Tobu Hotel has left before it closes at the end of February 2027. Even so, making the option of running vacant space short-term before closing visible on prime Shibuya land matters in cities where land is hard to secure. How do you fill the wide gap between 330,000 and 11.89 million outside the gym booking system? These two courts, for six months only, are one answer to that question.
