The pickleball governing body UPA (United Pickleball Association) has imposed a $50,000 (about 7.8 million yen) fine and a two-event suspension on top pro Parris Todd. Her participation in an event hosted by the Pickleball Nippon Federation, held at Tokyo's Ariake Tennis no Mori in December 2025, was judged to violate her exclusivity contract with UPA. The three players who took part in the same event -- James Ignatowich, Ryan Fu, and Vivian Glozman -- had their contracts terminated outright, surfacing a serious conflict in the pro pickleball world over "players' rights" and "the body's control."

Details of the penalties -- different severity by player

UPA handed down different penalties by player. Todd had obtained advance approval for one camp, but the actual activity is said to have differed from what she applied for. The three -- Ignatowich, Fu, and Glozman -- meanwhile took part without prior application.

Player Name Penalty Notes
Parris Todd $50,000 fine plus suspension from 1 MLP event and 1 PPA event One camp approved in advance. Actual activity exceeded the scope applied for
James Ignatowich Contract terminated (effective December 10, 2025) No prior application
Ryan Fu Contract terminated (effective December 10, 2025) No prior application
Vivian Glozman Contract terminated (effective December 10, 2025) No prior application
Tyra Black No penalty Was scheduled to participate but withdrew

There is precedent: in July 2025, Quang Duong had his contract terminated for repeated participation in unsanctioned events.

The full picture of the Tokyo Ariake event -- a clinic and exhibition hosted by the Japan federation

The event in question was held by the Pickleball Nippon Federation at Tokyo's Ariake Tennis no Mori Park in December 2025. It was made up of multiple programs, including a clinic (coaching session), exhibition matches, and a "play with the pros" session.

UPA CEO Connor Pardoe expressed strong displeasure, saying, "The advertising made prominent use of their status as top MLP and PPA players. The reputation and likeness we pay for were used to promote a direct competitor."

The structure of the exclusivity clause -- in exchange for over $30 million a year in compensation

Behind UPA taking such severe action lies the economic scale of the contracts. According to Pardoe, UPA pays pro players a combined total of more than $30 million (about 4.7 billion yen) a year. In exchange, players are bound by an exclusivity clause that restricts participation in pickleball-related activities (including exhibitions, clinics, and camps) outside UPA-sanctioned events.

Pardoe stated clearly, "Without an enforceable exclusivity clause, it's impossible to build and protect our brand value."

The players' rebuttal -- "we didn't violate our contracts"

The penalized players are pushing back strongly.

Parris Toddsaid in a statement, "There was no intent to submit inaccurate or incomplete information. As soon as it came to light, I immediately ceased all involvement. I will do everything to uphold the highest standard of integrity."

Ignatowich, Fu, and Glozmanthe three filed a joint appeal, arguing, "Our contracts had no clause prohibiting this activity. We didn't compete in another league, promote a rival tour, or receive compensation."

UPA acknowledged receipt of the appeal on December 22, 2025, but subsequent developments have not been made public.

Impact on Japan -- the hurdle to hosting international events rises

This issue is not someone else's problem for Japan's pickleball world.PPA Tour Asia Hanoi Cupand other events held within a UPA-sanctioned framework are fine, but this case made clear that when a domestic body independently invites overseas top pros, the players' contractual restrictions become a major hurdle.

To bring world-class pros to Japan, prior coordination with UPA is essential. Approaching players directly on an individual basis alone risks penalties falling on the players, as in this case. UPA has also recently made a visit to build partnerships in Asia, so cooperation via sanctioned routes becomes a realistic option.

Ripple effects on pro pickleball as a whole -- the spark of a players'-rights movement

This penalty is spreading ripples across the entire pro pickleball world. The moves of the players' advocacy group WPPA (World Professional Pickleball Association) are drawing attention.

Strict application of the exclusivity clause has an aspect of restricting players' side income sources and global adoption activities. In other pro sports such as tennis and golf, it is common for players to take part in exhibitions and clinics in the offseason. Whether pickleball's exclusivity model will be maintained as is, or move toward relaxation under player pushback, is a theme to watch alongsideThe MLP 2026 seasonandthe PPA Finals race.

Summary

This situation, in which four top pros were penalized for taking part in the Tokyo Ariake event, exposed a structural contradiction inherent in pickleball's pro scene. While there is management rationale in UPA, which invests more than $30 million a year, protecting its exclusivity, criticism is strong of restricting players' freedom to take part in global adoption activities. In advancing pickleball's international rollout in Asia, including Japan, how to use the UPA-sanctioned framework holds the key going forward.
