Sagamihara Municipal Kita Sports Center in Kanagawa Prefecture (nicknamed Honegori Arena, Shimokuzawa, Midori Ward) is holding a pickleball taster session on Monday, September 21, 2026, a public holiday, for 300 yen with 12 places. Anyone aged 10 or over can apply, and elementary school children take the court with a guardian. Amid a run of news about pro tournaments and large facilities, a public gymnasium putting a paddle in your hand for a few hundred yen speaks directly to a practical question for players in Japan: where do you swing that first paddle?

Sagamihara Municipal Kita Sports Center opens the session on September 21, 300 yen, 12 places

The session runs from 12:30 to 14:30 on September 21, in the multipurpose room on the second floor of the building. It is open to those aged 10 and over, with elementary school children required to attend and take part with a guardian. The fee is 300 yen, brought on the day, and the cap is a modest 12 people. Applications are taken by phone to the facility (042-763-7711) or at the counter, through September 20. It is designed so you can try a sport played with a small racket called a paddle and a perforated plastic ball without buying any equipment yourself.

What deserves attention is the combination of price and scale. 300 yen is less than a tenth of a cinema ticket. A cap of 12 is also a number at which an instructor can personally check each person's grip and serve height. The aim differs from a promotional event that gathers crowds and cycles them through; this is a grounded entry point that passes a small group through an existing facility — the local gym.

A taster session and open play in July too: a door that keeps opening, not a one-off

This September session was not a sudden idea. In July, Honegori Arena also ran a taster session for beginners and open play for the more experienced. In other words, the public gymnasium in Sagamihara runs an entrance for first-timers and a place for those who want to continue side by side in the same building. The 300 yen worth of feel you get at a taster session leads into time spent rallying at open play.

Alongside Misato, Mitsuke and Chigasaki: the entry-point model public facilities are building

Using public facilities as an entry point is not unique to Sagamihara. Misato in Saitama Prefecture put togethera four-session introductory pickleball courseat the city gymnasium, taking a stepped approach rather than ending with a single taster. In Mitsuke, Niigata Prefecture, a gymnasium managed by a Mizuno-affiliated operator is widening the base witha free taster session for 20 people. Sagamihara's cap of 12 is, even against Mitsuke's 20, clearly designed toward the attentive, small-group end.

Some municipalities are now providing the courts themselves. In Kanagawa Prefecture, Chigasaki has set upfree courts with no reservation required, moving toward the city holding a place where people can play any time after their first taste. Lined up — taster sessions (Sagamihara), a course series (Misato), free trials (Mitsuke) and permanent courts (Chigasaki) — it becomes clear that the way local governments engage with pickleball is thickening from one-off announcements into systems.

Where "gymnasium pickleball" is useful for players in Japan

Even for people who already play, this gymnasium-style entry point has its uses. First, as a place to invite family or friends, 300 yen needs no explanation. It carries far less psychological weight than taking them to a tennis school or a membership facility. The conditions — ages 10 and up, guardian accompanying — also mean a parent and child can stand on the same court. For anyone wanting to start alongside their kids, this Sagamihara session genuinely works.

The other use is as reconnaissance, to judge whether you can keep playing locally. At a facility that ran both a taster session and open play in July, you can see the path: show up at the September taster, then move on to open play the following month. It is a reason to check the monthly schedule on the official site of the gymnasium in your own area to see whether it has started cycling pickleball the same way. Sagamihara's 12 places could fill quickly, so anyone who wants to continue should call early.

Applications and what to bring

  • Date and time: Monday, September 21, 2026 (public holiday), 12:30-14:30, in the second-floor multipurpose room of Sagamihara Municipal Kita Sports Center
  • Eligibility: ages 10 and up (elementary school children must be accompanied by a guardian who also takes part)
  • Fee: 300 yen (bring on the day), 12 places
  • Applications: by phone on 042-763-7711 or at the facility counter, accepted through September 20
  • What to bring: indoor shoes and clothes you can move in. Paddles and balls are provided by the organizers

Sagamihara's move offers a different yardstick from the prize money and court counts that dominate recent pickleball news. The key is that a small design — 300 yen, 12 places, from age 10 — has been carried from July into September, month after month. Start by opening the monthly schedule of your local facility to see whether the gymnasium in your town is doing the same. If you want to start in Sagamihara, one phone call by September 20 is the first step.
