PICA Corporation, part of the Fuji Kyuko group, has opened PICA PICKLE FUJISAIKO, an all-weather facility dedicated to racket sports, at its PICA Fujisaiko campsite in Yamanashi Prefecture. Pickleball is in the name, but seven activities are actually playable there, and pickleball is one corner of the design. Outdoor leisure destinations are starting to build the sport itself into how they draw visitors. For pickleball players in Japan it means one more place to hit while travelling, and it is also material for reading how a facility business bundles new sports together.

An indoor court bundling seven activities at a campsite below Mount Fuji

The facility sits at a campsite on Lake Saiko, west of Lake Kawaguchi. According to the operator, the floor area is about 700 square meters. Into it go seven racket and paddle activities: pickleball plus paddle smash, unique table tennis, table tennis, a target booth, frescobol and jazzminton. Groups of up to eight book the space privately for 60 minutes at a time, priced at 5,000 yen per group.

The point to watch is the all-weather part. Outdoor camping revenue swings with the weather, and rain translates directly into cancellations and lower spend per guest. Putting a roofed racket facility inside the campsite keeps dwell time and the activity menu intact when it rains. The operator calls it the world's first all-weather composite facility dedicated to racket sports, in effect choosing racket games as the thing that absorbs weather risk.

Why pickleball got top billing

It says something that pickleball, of the seven, is the one in the name. Born in North America, the game uses a smaller court than tennis and keeps rallies going, so beginners and experienced players, adults and children, work on the same court. Being enjoyable in a short session regardless of age or fitness suits a campsite whose guests come as families and groups. If a name is meant to pull people in, leading with the sport whose recognition is climbing fastest is a natural call.

In practice, though, the facility is a composite. Turn up for pickleball and you experience it as one option alongside table tennis and frescobol. Players looking for a dedicated permanent court and visitors who want to try the game as an extension of a holiday expect different things here. Put plainly, this is not a pickleball facility; it is a general racket-play facility where pickleball is also available.

FeaturesAll-weather composite racket facility

At 5,000 yen for eight people over 60 minutes, the price works out to a little over 600 yen per person per hour. Where membership-based indoor courts are priced anywhere from a few thousand to several tens of thousands of yen a month, this facility prices itself squarely for one-off, group, try-it visits. Permanent courts in the city assume repeat use by committed players; this one sells a racket experience as one item of holiday spending, and the difference is plain.

Resorts in Japan turning the sport into a product

Hotels and leisure operators folding pickleball in have become visibly more common lately. In Hokkaido,Club Med Tomamu built six courts and added pickleball to its summer resort menu. In city hotels,Hilton Tokyo has packaged an experience combining its rooftop beer garden with pickleballand sells it as a food-and-exercise bundle. As an example of converting idle space for a season,a Prince group property in Hakone is opening its tennis courts for pickleball over the summeras well.

What these share is treating pickleball less as a sport than as content for a stay. The Fujisaiko facility belongs to the same line. From the resort's side, it adds an activity that holds up against weather and season while keeping dedicated investment low. For the player community that wants to widen the base, more of these entry-point facilities around the country means more contact with beginners.

Takeaways for players and for operators

There are two things for people in Japanese pickleball to read here. One is its value as a travel option. The Fuji Five Lakes area is a day trip from the Tokyo area, and having somewhere to hit alongside camping or sightseeing is a good excuse to bring family and friends into contact with the game. This is a different route from travelling in search of a dedicated court: it lets people try the sport naturally, as part of a holiday.

The other is the design thinking behind the facility business. A single-sport dedicated court is strong when demand is predictable, but exposed to weather, season and the rise and fall of a boom. By bundling seven activities, the Fujisaiko facility can fill its hours with other racket games even if pickleball's popularity levels off. Reducing dependence on one sport offers a template for spreading risk to anyone planning to run courts or facilities.

Pickleball on the sign, a composite leisure facility in substance. How you judge that gap depends on where you stand. From the standpoint of growing the sport, more chances for people to try it counts for something. Separately from calls for better dedicated facilities, the fact that resort and leisure operators have begun using the game as a tool to draw visitors suggests the domestic market is entering its next stage.
