FAU claims its first title with overwhelming strength

The championship-winning members were Bella Nelson, Ava Cavataio, Jayden Broderick, and Alex Lamacchio. Across the tournament, they suffered only a single loss—and that was only in the semifinal against the University of Utah. A team with a combined DUPR score of 21.937, one of the highest levels in tournament history, showed strength true to those numbers.

Second place was the University of Utah (DUPR 21.641), and the previous year's champion, the University of Texas, stopped at third (DUPR 20.161).

Match format: pickleball as a team sport

The tournament format is a four-person team (2 men, 2 women), competing in the following four matches:

  • Men's doubles
  • Women's doubles
  • Mixed doubles (2 matches)

If it becomes 2-2, it is decided by a singles format called the "DreamBreaker" (21 points, rally scoring). This format is close to the NCAA method, and the point that it demands lifting up the whole team differs greatly from individual competition.

Participants have more than quintupled in five years

This tournament began in 2022. At the time, there were 150 participants. By 2026, it had grown toover 800more than five times the scale in five years.

Looking back at past championship schools,

  • 2022: UNC (inaugural champion, DUPR 19.406)
  • 2023: University of Virginia
  • 2024: Utah Tech
  • 2025: University of Texas
  • 2026: Florida Atlantic University

The fact that the champion changes every year shows how closely matched they are in ability and demonstrates the depth of the college scene.

Total prize money over 40,000 dollars: serious rewards even at a student tournament

The total prize money is over 40,000 dollars. The breakdown is as follows.

Category Prize money
First bracket champion $15,000
Runner-up $5,000
3rd and 4th place $2,500 each
Second bracket champion $3,000
Third bracket champion $1,000
Singles champion $500
Bonus for the school sending the most players $1,000

For players in the high school to university generation, it has become a place to aim for real prize money while balancing academics and competition.

This is the front line of spreading pickleball

Attention tends to gather on the pro scene, but in fact this kind ofenrichment of the student category is what supports the sport's sustainable growth. Today's college players will turn pro in five to ten years, increase spectators, and draw in sponsors.

In America,PPA Sacramento Openalongside pro tours like it, college leagues are steadily being developed. In Japan,MLP 2026interest in international tournaments like it is also rising, but the framework for student tournaments is still to come. How Japan's collegiate pickleball scene develops going forward is worth watching closely as a gauge of the pace of the sport's spread domestically.
