Florida, USABoca RatonIn the residential area "Parkside at Boca Trail", residents sued the homeowners association (HOA). The claim is that itconverted a tennis court to a pickleball court without permission, creating serious noise damage. The residents are seeking use-hour limits, soundproofing measures, or a reversal of the court conversion. Their attorney, Keith Grumer, argues, "Repeated exposure is extremely stressful."

2 Courts About 30m from Housing at Issue

According to the suit, the two courts in question are at a distance ofabout 100 feet (about 30 meters)from the nearest housing. Residents say "sharp, repetitive ball noise continues for hours," arguing it's hard to use the yard or open the windows. The high, popping sound of pickleball's characteristic hard paddle and ball colliding is at the center of the neighborhood trouble.

The "600 Feet" Guideline Shows How Easily the Sound Carries

The complaint points out that for pickleball sound without soundproofing measures, there's a nationwide guideline recommendinga separation of up to 600 feet (about 180 meters)from housing. This case's roughly 30 meters falls far below that. In the US, similar complaints and disputes are occurring in various places through sites like PickleballNoiseRelief.com, and balancing court installation with neighborhood consideration is a common challenge.

A Lesson for Court Development in Japan

In Japan too, as new courts advance in urban areas and near housing, consideration for ball noise is indispensable from the planning stage. Repurposing existing tennis courts is quick to introduce, but there's a risk of harming neighborhood relations with ball noise that resonates higher than tennis. It's a case showing that design such as separation distance, soundproof walls, and advance agreement on use hours becomes the key to avoiding trouble.
