Dentsu and Asics at the same table, and the start of turning the sport into infrastructure

Article Summary
Pickleball One partnered with five major Japanese companies and raised funding. Rather than a simple investment, we lay out what court operators and enthusiasts in Japan should watch in this move to turn the sport into "industry infrastructure," bundling equipment, real estate, media, and corporate networking.

Pickleball One (Chiyoda, Tokyo), operator of the urban indoor facility "Pickleball One Ginza Shimbashi," announced that it had raised funding through a third-party allotment of shares in partnership with five major Japanese companies: Asics Ventures, Sansan, TBS Innovation Partners, Dentsu Group, and Mitsui Fudosan (reported April 7, 2026). This move—bringing equipment, real estate, media, and business-card management to the same table across different industries—is a statement of intent to launch pickleball not as a passing boom but as "industry infrastructure," and for court operators in Japan it is a sign that their business environment is about to change.

What it means that five majors entered with a "division of roles"

What draws the eye in this partnership is that the five companies didn't simply line up as investors—each entered in a role aligned with its core business. Asics handles expanding its footwear rental business and strengthening the competitive base; Sansan handles operating the "Sansan Pickleball Court Ikebukuro" set to open this summer, plus using pickleball as a business communication tool in place of exchanging business cards; TBS handles promotion through events and international tournaments; Mitsui Fudosan handles running the corporate league "Corporate Pickleball & BIZ CUP" using its own assets; and Dentsu handles support for marketing and fan-base building. Not just the entry point of "playing" the sport, but the surrounding functions—facilities, equipment, tournaments, corporate networking, and information dissemination—are structured with a division of labor from the outset.

The amount raised itself is undisclosed. More than the size of the figure, the fact that this group of companies directed resources toward the same sport all at once carries more weight in how the market takes it.

Why launch it as an industry now

Behind it is a read that the Japanese market is in its "early growth" phase. In a market survey released by Pickleball One, Japan's player base is estimated at about 330,000—a jump from about 45,000 the year before. Meanwhile, the latent pool interested in the sport is put at 11.89 million, framed as a structure with roughly 36x room to grow against the current playing population. In the US, some 50 million people are said to have played over the past year, and Japan stands at the entrance of that adoption curve.

The greater a market's headroom, the harder it is for the efforts of individual players and small courts alone to make supply keep up with demand. Equipment availability, places to play, tournaments to test your skills, and information that creates a reason to start—only when these come together does someone who "wants to give it a try" become someone who "keeps playing." This partnership reads as an attempt to prepare that supply-side foundation all at once, using the capital and functions of major companies.

What the large 2027 indoor facility points to

Reported as a use of the raised funds is a large indoor-only facility to open domestically as early as within 2027. Pickleball One already launched an urban indoor facility in Ginza Shimbashi in November 2025, running even at central-Tokyo prices of over 7,000 yen an hour for a full court and in the 5,000-yen range for a practice-oriented 3/4-length court. Mitsui Fudosan, a real estate developer, coming in as a subscriber suggests the next facility will proceed not as a one-off box but with the idea of embedding pickleball into urban development.

This flow of "embedding permanent courts into cities" overlaps in direction with the large-scale investment we've been tracking on this site, such asUS Life Time's 28-court facility. The scale doesn't reach that of the US, but even in Japan we are entering a phase where "whoever can secure the courts holds the market."

What operators and enthusiasts in Japan should take away

The arrival of a major-company alliance is both a threat and a tailwind for those running courts in the regions or as individuals. The threat side: capital-intensive facilities in the city center strengthen customer acquisition through advertising, tournaments, and talent exposure, and take hold of the awareness entry point. The tailwind side: if Dentsu and TBS lift the overall exposure of the sport, the customer-acquisition cost falls for regional facilities that until now had to start by explaining "what is pickleball?" When the market itself is expanding, there is plenty of room for people to flow toward local courts as the entry point to the experience.

Especially worth watching is the "corporate networking" context handled by Sansan and Mitsui Fudosan. A business-card management company operating courts and a real estate company running a corporate league is nothing less than a move to pitch pickleball to companies as a tool for employee benefits and external networking. The case of travel giant JTB operating an in-town courtis a similar sign of the sport broadening its use from "leisure" to "a business touchpoint." Regional operators, too, have room to design corporate usage plans and company-vs-company event formats as a way to fill weekday-daytime capacity.

The make-or-break moment of turning a boom into an industry

With five companies from different industries directing resources to the same sport, Japanese pickleball has begun shifting from the "apparently it's trending" phase to the phase of building out the supply chain. Equipment is available, courts are within commuting distance, there are tournaments to aim for, and reasons to start reach people—once this cycle starts turning, the figure of 11.89 million latent players stops being a pipe dream. Majors lay the foundation, and regional operators and enthusiasts support day-to-day playing opportunities on top of it. The roles differ, but the goal—rooting the sport—is one. We want to watch closely over the next year or two whether this partnership actually translates into court numbers and utilization.
