How to Book a Court in Vietnam via Zalo

Many courts in Vietnam don't have a dedicated reservation site. Instead, the point of contact is "Zalo," the messaging app most Vietnamese use daily. This article explains the flow, from checking a court's availability on Zalo to confirming a reservation, with Vietnamese sample phrases you can send as they are.

TOC

Why court reservations in Vietnam go through Zalo

Zalo is Vietnam's largest messaging app, used by more than 80% of the population. Small shops and facilities don't have dedicated sites, and phone, Facebook, and Zalo are effectively the official points of contact. Contact is basically via Zalo, and payment is cash, VietQR, MoMo, ZaloPay, and so on, depending on the court.

  • The usage rate among Vietnamese is over roughly 80%, the standard means of contact
  • Shops are often a case of "the hotline number is the Zalo contact as-is"
  • Everything from checking availability to a tentative hold tends to be done within the chat

Zalo basics worth knowing

Official Accounts (OA) and groups (nhóm)

Zalo has shops' "Official Accounts (OA)" and among-friends "group chats (nhóm)." Reservations proceed through one of these, or through a chat to an individual number.

  • OA: an official point of contact held by larger courts and chains. They handle reservations in individual chats
  • Group (nhóm): a community contact network. Open slots and friendly-match recruitment flow through it

Three payment options

The three often used for reservations and deposit payments are as follows.

PaymentFeatures
MoMoThe most-used smartphone payment. Requires a local number and account
ZaloPaySending money is completed within a Zalo chat. Strong for splitting bills and QR payments
Bank transfer (VietQR)Scan a QR to send money. Widely used at the front desk too

If you're a foreigner without a local account yet, cash payment at the front desk is the surest option for the time being. For court fee estimates, see thefee range guide.

Usable even by foreigners

  • Registration: free from the app store. You can register if you have a phone number
  • A Japanese number: registration is possible, but it can be inconvenient for SMS verification and local contact
  • A local SIM is convenient: with a Vietnamese number, notifications and money transfers are smooth too

Even at courts where English is hard to get through, you can translate and send text, so the language barrier feels lower than expected.

How to find a court's Zalo

First, find the contact for the court you want to reserve. You can often reach the Zalo through one of the following.

  • Facebook page: the facility's page lists a hotline number or Zalo
  • Google Maps: you can often search Zalo by the listed phone number and add as a friend
  • Court signs and postings: a hotline number or a QR code for Zalo is posted
  • Community (Zalo group): joining the circle of regulars gets you availability info fast

Community by area is especially reliable. Open-slot sharing and friendly-match recruitment flow through Facebook groups and Zalo groups daily. Mixing in with the regulars, you may get information on hidden-gem courts not yet listed on reservation sites, or sudden cancellation slots.

Once you have the number

Scan the other party's QR with Zalo's "scan QR," or search by phone number and add as a friend. You can show your own QR from "My QR code."

The basic reservation flow

The exchange is simple. Proceeding in the following order means you won't get lost even on your first time.

  1. Contact the court's Zalo and check availability (sân trống) for your desired date and time
  2. Staff check open slots and inform you of the fee and whether a deposit is required
  3. If a deposit (đặt cọc) is required, send money by bank transfer, MoMo, or ZaloPay
  4. After sending, send a screenshot and confirm the reservation
  5. On the day of play, confirm once more by chat or phone just in case

Weekends and evening-to-night peak hours fill up easily, so get in touch 1–2 days in advance. Fee estimates are compiled by area in thecourt fee range guide.

A collection of Vietnamese phrases you can send as-is

At local courts, English may not get through. Copy the sample phrases below and send them to Zalo, and you can make at least a basic reservation. These are one example of polite phrasing, so it's best to send them as they are, including the tone marks (dấu).

What you want to sendVietnamese (example)
I'd like to reserveChào shop, mình muốn đặt sân pickleball.
Is there availability tomorrow?Ngày mai còn sân trống không?
Is 7 p.m. tonight open?Tối nay 19h còn sân không ạ?
How much per hour?Giá thuê sân một giờ bao nhiêu?
2 hours from 6 p.m. tomorrowMình muốn đặt sân lúc 18h ngày mai, 2 tiếng.
Is there paddle rental?Có cho thuê vợt không?
Is a deposit required? How much?Có cần đặt cọc không? Cọc bao nhiêu?
The transfer details (account / QR),Cho mình xin số tài khoản / mã QR để chuyển khoản.
I've made the transferMình chuyển khoản rồi nhé.
Can I cancel?Cho mình hủy sân được không?

Handy words to remember

  • sân = court / sân trống = open court
  • đặt sân = reserve a court / đặt cọc = deposit
  • thuê vợt = paddle rental / chuyển khoản = bank transfer

An example of an actual exchange

The first few back-and-forths go something like this (numbers and times get through as Arabic numerals as-is).

  • You: Chào shop, ngày mai 18h còn sân không? (Tomorrow at 6 p.m., is there availability?)
  • Shop: Còn 1 sân nhé, 200k/giờ. (1 court open, 200,000 dong per hour)
  • You: Ok mình đặt 2 tiếng. Có cần cọc không? (I'll take 2 hours. Is a deposit needed?)
  • Shop: Cọc 100k, chuyển khoản giúp mình nhé. (Deposit 100,000, please transfer)

If you're not confident in the exchange, drafting it in a translation app before sending is the surest way.

Once you've reserved, until the day

  • By the day before, reconfirm by chat: "I have a reservation for (date) at (time)"
  • On the day, show your name or a screenshot of the reservation at the front desk and settle up
  • If you've paid a deposit, only the balance remains. Have both cash and smartphone payment ready

Tips for avoiding reservation trouble

There are a few points to watch with deposit exchanges. Confirming whether the contact is trustworthy before sending money is the basic.

  • Avoid sending a deposit to an unverified account, and check Facebook reviews and the reputation among regulars
  • Once you've secured it online, reconfirm availability once more before the day
  • Ask about the cancellation policy in advance (a no-show can lead to deposit forfeiture and a drop in reputation)

If your plans change, it's courteous to send word of a cancellation or time change early. A last-minute no-show not only loses your deposit but also affects your impression within the community. Since you can translate and send via chat, even just conveying a word like "something came up, I'm sorry" changes the impression.

For local greetings and rules on waiting your turn, see thecourt etiquette articleis introduced in detail.

Find a court in the area you want to go to, and ask about availability on Zalo.
