Players went all the way around four clubs on June 24
What went through was not simple addition. Elsie Hendershot from St. Louis to Chicago, Mari Humberg from Chicago to Atlanta, Kaitlyn Christian from Atlanta to Texas, and Angie Walker from Texas to St. Louis.a closed loop in which four players moved the same direction and came back to the starting point. Cash flowed through only part of the loop, from Atlanta to Texas and from Texas to St. Louis. Not every club paid an equal share.
On that same June 24, Chicago and St. Louis completed another deal between themselves. Chicago received Jon Lucian Goins and St. Louis received Hunter Johnson plus cash. The same two clubs sat down twice in one day under two separate frameworks.
Why not split it into two straight swaps? The Dink, a US pickleball outlet, analyzes that Humberg, ranked 19th in women's doubles, would normally have gone to St. Louis, but the club already had two women inside the top 20 and could not take on another. In other words,it was roster construction limits, not a balance of playing strength, that made a third and fourth club necessary. The same outlet reads Chicago's intent as putting Hendershot on the right side so an existing player could move back to her preferred left, and sees Texas bringing Christian back less than a year after letting her go as a reacquisition for insurance.
Pickleball.com
On deadline day, one player passed through three clubs
Sort the July 20 entries oldest first and another picture emerges. In a three-team trade starting from the Los Angeles Mad Drops, Gabe Joseph went to Miami, then straight from Miami to the Bay Area Breakers, and from the Bay Area on to the Las Vegas Night Owls.the same player changed clubs three times on the same day. The Bay Area gave up Joseph and took Brayden Jacobson, while Miami received James Delgado.
Tyler Loong's movement was similar. He went from the Utah Black Diamonds to Miami on July 15 and returned to Utah five days later, on the 20th, as one leg of a three-team trade. Cash from Los Angeles was folded into the round trip. On that same July 20, the New Jersey 5s acquired Federico Staksrud and Milly Rain while the Orlando Squeeze received Martin Emmrich, Lina Padegimaite, and cash (Staksrud's shock move to a superteam, and the maturing business the MLP trade reveals)。

| Player who made a round trip in five days | Tyler Loong (Utah → Miami → Utah) |
| Player who moved between two clubs in a week | Maia Bui (Bay Area → California → Florida) |
Four deals clustered on the July 20 deadline, and several more had been locked in just before it, from July 13 to 15. Even with a long window open, the actual work bunches up right before the cutoff. If a league in Japan sets up a transfer system, that skew can be built into the design from the start.
Yuta Funamizu moved to Utah, putting a Japanese player inside roster planning
In a July 15 deal, Utah acquired Yuta Funamizu (listed in English as Yuta Funemizu) while Miami received Loong and cash. Funamizu won the soft tennis world championship, then switched sports in 2024 and moved to the United States, becoming the first Japanese player to sign an exclusive contract with UPA and compete on the PPA Tour and in MLP. His title in Tachikawa was reported in Japan as well (A homecoming win just as promised: the day Yuta Funamizu beat a former world No. 1 in Tachikawa)。
The change here is less about winning and losing than about the nature of belonging. A Japanese player has gone from being someone invited to join toa roster asset moved mid-season at a club's convenience. It is evidence of having settled into the league, and at the same time it means stepping into a world where a club affiliation is not guaranteed by the year. The way the American pro hierarchy is hardening has been covered here before (Grow up in APP, earn in UPA—how player defections reflect the tiering of the pros). For the next player who crosses over from Japan, what counts is not only the ability to be picked but the resilience to produce after being moved.
Read from an operator's point of view, the interesting part is not the quality of the players but thatroster rules determined the shape of the dealところにある。
If a corporate-team league is put together in Japan, how far player movement should be allowed is essentially a blank page. With no cap, strong players gather at companies with deep pockets; make it too strict and transfers never happen, leaving no talking points mid-season. MLP set rules to avoid the former and picked up the latter as a byproduct. Whether transfers can be designed as an annual fixture that comes around at a set time each year, rather than as an exceptional accident, will decide whether a league lasts.
Another point unfamiliar in Japan is cash being built into deals. The club giving up a player receives cash, or a third party shoulders cash alone. That flexibility is what made the four-club loop possible. In Japan, where corporate team budgets tend to be fixed by fiscal year, this is the first place things get stuck.
Six-player rosters are keeping transfers active
MLP in 2026 has 20 clubs, each with a six-player roster. From this year the distinction between starters and substitutes was abolished, and all six are eligible to be used. The four players in a DreamBreaker can also be chosen freely, two men and two women, regardless of substitutions in doubles. The roster is small, and everyone is expected to play, so swapping one player has an outsized effect. The structure that makes trades easy sits in the rules themselves.
From the equipment and sponsor side, that fluidity is awkward to handle. If you designed exposure around a city club and a player passes through three clubs in a day, the signage has to be remade. Conversely, for a brand contracted with an individual player, every change of club spreads exposure into a new market. If a Japanese manufacturer gets involved with an overseas league, the view changes depending on whether it ties itself to a club or to a player.
