Over the long autumn holiday, a department store rooftop in Osaka turns into a court. Takashimaya Osaka will run a World New Sports Taster Event for five days, from Saturday, September 19 to Wednesday, September 23, on a special setup on the 8th-floor rooftop. Visitors can try the American-bornPickleball<\/strong>, Finland's Molkky and Hungary's Teqball for 550 yen including tax, or free. One more entrance to sport you can drop into empty-handed has appeared in the middle of a shopping district.<\/p>\n

From a pickleball point of view, these five days are not just a retail event. They are a test of pushing the sport into shoppers' path and putting people who have never held a paddle onto a court.<\/p>\n

Molkky scores by knocking down wooden pins, and Teqball is a soccer-derived game played on a curved table using the feet and head. Paddle, throwing and footwork sit in one place, each with a different physical character. Alongside them, a pop-up for the paddle brand Gamma runs on the 6th-floor Rose Patio.<\/p>\n

Why a department store lays a court on its roof<\/h2>\n

For department stores the rooftop was once a draw that brought families in with amusement rides and beer gardens. Putting new sports in that space shifts the reason to visit from buying to trying. The 550 yen price is not set to make a profit; it works more like an admission ticket meant to lengthen the stay and feed spending inside the store.<\/p>\n

Why pickleball was chosen is just as clear. A game that mixes elements of tennis, table tennis and badminton lets a first-timer keep a rally going within minutes. Anyone from junior high school age to adults can stand on the same court regardless of athletic background, which suits family spending on a day off. Even on a limited rooftop footprint, a court that needs about a quarter of a tennis court makes it easy to fit several in.<\/p>\n

Pickleball being the only one that charges and takes bookings reflects how much demand the organizers expect. Priority booking opened at midnight on September 10 on the Osaka Takashimaya website, and walk-ins can join if places remain on the day. The one thing to check on the morning itself, if you are traveling far, is that the event is canceled in the rain.<\/p>\n

Department stores and commercial complexes serving as an entrance to the sport is not an Osaka-only phenomenon. If you are booking, plan your route through the store around the fact that the three pickleball days start at 10:30 and run in 30-minute sessions, and fit shopping and meals around it. Because it is limited to junior high school age and up, families with small children can aim instead at the free Molkky (September 22) or Teqball (September 23). Payment is cashless only, so even if you usually carry cash, set up a payment app first.<\/p>\n
