At the core of the OMNI is a mechanism Selkirk calls the adjustable MOI (moment of inertia) weight system. One 7.5g weight sits on each side, and with no tape, glue or tools, you pinch it out at the edge and slot it into a different channel. The Dink's review describes the motion as removing it at the edge and putting it back wherever you like, and notes that the notches in the channel guide the positioning.<\/p>\n

What changes is the swing weight. Move the weight toward the tip and you get more plow-through, and the ball carries. Set it in the middle and the paddle behaves neutrally; move it down or take it out and the paddle gets easier to handle, so resets die more readily. Same frame, three or more distinct personalities.<\/p>\n\n

ReactCore sandwiches the central foam between two rings<\/h2>\n

The OMNI's feel comes from the structure of its core. Selkirk calls it ReactCore: a floating PureFoam center surrounded by two concentric rings, an inner PureFoam ring and an outer EVA power ring. The inner ring cushions defensive resets, while the outer ring returns energy on drives and overheads. A soft center and a springy perimeter in one panel, with the job split by where on the face the ball lands.<\/p>\n

Building a core in layers of foam is not unique to the OMNI. It follows directly from paddlesshifting from honeycomb to foam cores<\/a>, with makers now competing on the internal design of the core. The OMNI's twin rings are one example of that competition being cut finer still \u2014 down to which part of the face is soft and which part pops.<\/p>\n

Adjustable paddles arrive now because regulation has capped power and spin<\/h2>\n

Why does the idea of changing a paddle's character with weights arrive now? Two trends sit behind it. One is power.With approved paddles reported to have had their power cut to around 60% of peak levels<\/a>, competing on pop alone no longer creates much separation. The other is spin. Witha 2100 spin-rate cap due in October<\/a>, the room to gain through surface treatment is shrinking too. With pop and spin both capped, the next variable manufacturers can touch has moved to balance point and the range of swing-weight adjustment. The OMNI's weight system reads as a move onto that newly open ground.<\/p>\n
