At an international tournament in Thailand at the end of July, she came through qualifying against opponents of her own age with far more experience and reached the quarterfinals in two divisions. Now that junior development is finally being discussed in Japan, it is worth digging into what \"last eight in seven months\" really shows.<\/p>\n

Quarterfinals in two divisions in Thailand, seven months after starting<\/h2>\n

The stage was the Asia Pickleball Junior Open 2026, held in Thailand from July 31 to August 3, 2026. At a tournament gathering juniors from across Asia, Astano finished 8th (reaching the quarterfinals) in girls' under-16 doubles and 6th (also the quarterfinals) in the girls' under-14 division. The quarterfinal is the last-eight round, so she advanced that far in both age groups.<\/p>\n

What stands out is how quickly she got there. According to Pickleball News Asia, the source of the report, only seven months passed between Astano first holding a paddle and this result. Pickleball is called a sport that is quick to learn, but a beginner getting results at a local grassroots tournament and a beginner trading points with experienced players at an Asia-wide junior international are two different things. This switch from tennis is a well-worn path even at the top of the world game. Fast exchanges at the net and control of the paddle face are areas where tennis players tend to hold an advantage. On the equipment side, Astano is now supported by paddle brand Selkirk as an \"Emerging Junior Pro.\" A player seven months into the sport earning a manufacturer's junior slot is a sign that both the competitive and equipment sides see room for her to grow.<\/p>\n

Astano's background captures how the junior game is spreading now. Filipino by nationality, raised and based in Dubai, and her first international result came at a tournament in Thailand. Three countries and territories overlap in one player.<\/p>\n

With player numbers expanding fast, pickleball's practice environments, coaches and tournaments are coming together across borders. Growing up in a city where facility investment is advancing, as Dubai is, and gaining experience at tournaments in neighboring countries \u2014 this kind of junior raised across borders will only become more common. For players and coaches in Japan too, the idea of not limiting travel destinations and training bases to the domestic scene is becoming realistic.
