Players coming from nine administrative units means the development work is not clustered in one or two big cities. In the early stages of a sport, players emerge only where the facilities are concentrated. That the association was able to build a squad by picking from across the country is the substance of this announcement. Skechers India has also come in as official kitting partner, supplying tournament kit and shoes to all 34 players. Sourcing the gear has not been dumped on the families.

What the association president said, and the fact that he also heads the AFP

Announcing the squad, AIPA president Arvind Ramesh Prabhoo said: "The 3rd Asian Pickleball Junior is an important milestone in our vision of building a strong international pathway for young Indian players. Competing against Asia's best juniors gives players irreplaceable experience, builds their confidence and accelerates their growth." He went on: "AIPA is committed to creating opportunities for players to compete at the highest level while strengthening India's standing in the global pickleball community."

There is one piece of context you cannot leave out when reading those remarks. In November 2025, Prabhoo was elected unanimously as president of the AFP, the body staging the tournament. The same election put three Indians into senior posts: Rajath Kankar as vice president, Chetan Sanil as secretary general and Hemant Phalphar as OCA representative. In other words, the side sending the squad and the side running the tournament are headed by the same man. The reordering of Asia's governing bodies has also moved forward in the form of a single unified ranking (No Need for Two Yardsticks — Asian Pickleball Moves Toward One Ranking), but the sequence here - the country that took the lead then sending one of the largest squads - is worth keeping in mind.

Japan's fork in the road: select players, or invite applications

Japan has a route into the same tournament. The Japan Pickleball Federation invited applications for national team places at the 2025 Asia Pickleball Junior Open, held July 13-15 in Quang Nam Province, Vietnam. Applicants had to hold Japanese nationality and a passport, be born in 2007 or later, and be able to travel to the venue. The deadline was midnight on May 16, with selection results to be announced at the end of May. Up to that point, little separates Japan from India.

What differs is how the costs are handled. The federation's guidelines state that travel and accommodation are paid by the player as a rule, and that a parent or another trusted adult must accompany them (the same document notes that travel costs for top players are covered with support from an airline partner). For the 2026 Asian University Championships, the same federation used a two-tier structure separating a fully funded "Team Japan" from a self-funded "Team Japan Rising," and asked applicants to submit at least three minutes of doubles match video.selection begins not with the federation but with an application from the family- that is how the system is designed.

Neither approach is simply right. An open call has the merit of leaving a door open to children with no coaching connections. The Indian model, by contrast, has the association picking players out of nine states, with a company even covering the kit. When a family's ability to pay decides who takes part, the odds rise that the player who can afford the trip, rather than the best player, ends up on the national team. Teenagers from overseas keep turning up at tournaments in Japan (Teenage challengers arrive at the Tokyo Open — can Japan's junior development keep up?), and that gap will eventually show up in the results.

This tournament has its exit mapped out first

The striking part of the AFP's design is that medallists receive a "Golden Ticket" to the world championships in Dallas (junior and college divisions). At the university championships held alongside it, the top two teams get the same privilege. The Asian tournament, in other words, was set up from the start to work as a qualifier for the world event. That reverses the usual order of stacking up domestic tournaments before thinking about international ones: the exit is placed first and everything is worked backwards from there.

Junior development in Japan is still at the stage of widening the entrance. As the case of a Hawaii development network pushing a 15-year-old to two titles at a Tokyo tournament shows (Two Golds in Tokyo — 15-Year-Old Shimabukuro Shows the Depth of Hawaii's Development Network), countries where winning leads to a defined next stage produce results while players are still in their teens. Japan has yet to draw that staircase. The playing population itself is growing: a March 2026 survey of roughly 30,000 people by Pickleball One estimated about 330,000 players in Japan, seven times the roughly 45,000 of the previous year. Even at seven times the base, without a route upward the growth simply spreads sideways and stops.

Practical details for getting involved from Japan

Item

Details

Tournaments

Asia Pickleball Junior Open 2026

Run

July 28-30, 2026 (the university championships alongside it run from July 31)

Venues

Mahidol University, Salaya campus / 999 Phutthamonthon Sai 4 Road, Salaya, Nakhon Pathom 73170, Thailand

Access

About 1 to 1.5 hours by car from Bangkok's international airport

Host

Asia Federation of Pickleball（AFP）

Age groups

U12, U14, U16 and U18 (boys' and girls' singles and doubles)

Entry

Entries opened April 10, 2026 and closed June 30 (registration has moved to Baseline)

Entry fee

US$40 per player per event (about 6,500 yen)

National team selection

Open application through the Japan Pickleball Federation. How many medals India's 34 players win, though, is secondary information for Japan. What matters is whether the setup - gathering players from nine states and having a company supply the gear - is repeated at the same scale next year. Once, and it is just a talking point. Twice, and it is a system.

On the Japanese side, the thing worth watching is what application guidelines the Japan Pickleball Federation issues for the same tournament in 2027. Will the costs stay with the families, or will the two-tier split between funded and self-funded players used at the university championships be extended to juniors? Coaches and parents involved in the sport would do better to ask the federation now about the outlook for financial support, rather than waiting for the call to open in early spring. Before debating how many players to send, find out who is drawing the line between the children who can go and the ones who cannot.

Source:Pickleball News Asia／Asianet Newsable／Asia Federation of Pickleball (official site)／Japan Pickleball Federation (2025 junior national team call for applications)／Japan Pickleball Federation (2026 university championships call for applications)／The Tribune／Telangana Today／PR TIMES (Pickleball One)

India's association is sending 34 juniors from nine states to a tournament in Thailand that opens on July 28.
