The class for grades 1 and 2 with guardians ran 14:00-14:50, and the class for grades 2 to 6 with guardians 15:10-16:00. The announcement page showed both classes as"fully booked", with lottery entries open from June 18 to 25 and results announced at 17:00 on June 28. Participants were told to bring outdoor athletic shoes, a drink, a towel and clothes they could move in.

The next sessions, on August 30 and September 6, move to a different venue. At the Shibuya Sports Center (1-40-18 Nishihara, Shibuya), August 30 uses the small gymnasium on the third floor and September 6 the First Martial Arts Hall on the first floor. The list of things to bring has changed to indoor shoes. Swinging a paddle in a martial arts hall says everything about where this sport currently sits in Japan.

The wording barely changed; the capacity and the way places are allocated did

The announcement for this class goes out in almost identical wording every time. The line about welcoming Takuma Tsukimura, who competes at international events, as coach and enjoying rallies and matches together as parent and child is repeated, as is the reassurance that a difference in size does not matter and that you do not need to play sport regularly. It is entry-level writing that turns nobody away.

The change showed up in the conditions rather than the wording. The May 18 session, announced on April 8, 2025, was introduced as having been hugely popular at the previous year's top-athlete event, and was capped at 8 parent-child pairs per class on a first-come, first-served basis. That session filled up once applications opened. In later announcements the phrasing shifted to a hugely popular program, capacity moved to 10 parent-child pairs per class, and the application method switched toLottery. Applications had outgrown the scale a first-come, first-served system could handle.

The length of a session has moved too: 45 minutes (May and November 2025), 60 minutes (December 2025 and January 2026), 50 minutes (from July 2026). The class fits itself to the length of slot the facility can secure.

Lay out the record of sessions and the design of the class is shifting

Dates

Venues

Session length

Capacity (per class)

How to Choose

Announcement date

May 18, 2025

SCC Sendagaya, B1F Circle Hall

45 minutes

8 parent-child pairs

First-come, first-served

2025/04/08

November 30, 2025

Shibuya Sports Center, 1F First Martial Arts Hall

45 minutes

10 parent-child pairs

Lottery

2025/10/03

December 7, 2025

SCC Sendagaya, B1F Circle Hall

60 minutes

10 parent-child pairs

Lottery

2025/10/25

January 18, 2026

SCC Sendagaya, B1F Circle Hall

60 minutes

10 parent-child pairs

Lottery

2025/12/03

July 26, 2026

SCC Sendagaya, B1F Circle Hall

50 minutes

10 parent-child pairs

Lottery (fully booked)

2026/06/28

August 30, 2026

Shibuya Sports Center, 3F small gymnasium

50 minutes

10 parent-child pairs

Lottery

2026/07/01

September 6, 2026

Shibuya Sports Center, 1F First Martial Arts Hall

50 minutes

10 parent-child pairs

Lottery

2026/07/01

Across all seven dates the coach has been Tsukimura alone. With two classes, that is a maximum of 20 pairs in a day. As a number it is small. But seven dates between May 2025 and September 2026 puts it in the territory of a regular program rather than a one-off event.

What the organizer and the coach each say publicly

The facility describes itself as a child-rearing support facility in Shibuya built around sport. Handling pickleball within a child-rearing remit rather than as a governing body sets the character of these classes. The explanation of the sport also starts every time from a racket sport combining elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis.

On Tsukimura, the facility's published profile states that in October 2024 he was sent to the PWR INDIA event as a national team development player, and lists as results a bronze medal in men's doubles at the PPA MESACUP Skill 4.5, a quarterfinal finish in men's doubles at the PWR JAPAN CUP, a mixed doubles title on the UTR PICKLEBALL JAPAN TOUR and a men's doubles title at the JPA KINTO JAPAN CUP. It goes on to say that he now has both a player side and a business side, working daily on spreading pickleball and building the pickleball industry. The competitor's title and the industry title sitting side by side matters later on.

In a Pickleball One column (June 5, 2025), the player himself wrote that he had come from tennis and that when he first heard the name of the sport he “completely underestimated it,” then looked back on his first session: “The rallies kept going after just a few minutes, I caught myself laughing, and before I knew it I had made friends.” He listed his current work as planning and running taster sessions and events, managing an instructor organization, and supporting tennis clubs in adopting the sport, and closed with: “Pickleball is a sport where ‘this is fun!’ comes before technique or fitness.”

The response from applicants has not been published as a figure. All that is known is that the first-come slots filled, the format switched to a lottery, and both classes on July 26 were full. No application ratio has been released.

Players who compete internationally can teach free classes only while the market is small

The most notable thing about this class is neither that it is free nor that it uses a ward facility. It is the arrangement itself: a player at the level sent to international tournaments standing in front of ten first-graders and their parents.

In an internet survey of roughly 30,000 people conducted by Pickleball One in March 2026, the domestic playing population came to about 330,000, roughly seven times the previous year's 45,000. Awareness was 13.1%, and potential players were calculated at about 11.89 million. A scale of 330,000 means the layer between the top players and beginners is thin. That is why the same person plays international tournaments and also teaches at a free ward class.

This arrangement becomes harder to sustain as the market grows. Once coaching carries a price and instructors' calendars fill up, bringing an active player to a free class for ward residents gets difficult (Will Japan see a coach earning 30 million yen? The day pickleball becomes a job). Turned around, what parents and children in Shibuya receive for free today could become a paid, scarce slot a few years from now.

It works right now because for Tsukimura, promotional work is itself part of the job. At a point where major equipment and advertising companies have begun putting capital into the edges of the sport (Dentsu and Asics at the same table, and the start of turning the sport into infrastructure), the hours a player spends teaching a class still make sense as a revenue source outside the show. That balance breaks when prize money and sponsorship alone fill a player's time.

Is there anywhere in the ward to go after the class?

Read from a facility operator's side, the question is where these people land next. Up to 20 pairs a day, a few times a year. Where a parent and child who hit for only 50 minutes should go the following week is not written in the announcement. It does not need to be. Supotto is a childcare support facility, not a governing body for the sport.

There are designs that run an introductory course as four consecutive sessions, as in Misato, Saitama (Misato runs a four-part pickleball intro at its gymnasium, because growth starts at the door), and the odds of a participant reaching the point of playing on their own differ between a repeated one-off format and a continuous course. The Shibuya class repeats at the same venue with the same instructor, so both the people who lose the lottery and the people who attend once and then have nowhere to go tend to stay stuck where they are.

For nearby facility operators this is a straightforward opening. Run a no-booking beginner slot in the same area the week after the ward class. Lend out paddles and balls. Let non-residents in. Private operators pick up the conditions a ward service cannot, and because the dates go up on the announcement page in advance, they can work backwards from them.

Open slots in gymnasiums are deciding how the sport grows

Look at the venue breakdown and a different room is used every time: a community center basement hall, the small gym at the sports center, a martial arts hall. A sport without dedicated courts moves to fit whatever slots existing facilities have open. The session length swinging between 45, 50 and 60 minutes has the same explanation.

The effect on the equipment side is concrete. Because it is indoors, the item participants must bring is indoor shoes. Paddles and balls are provided by the organizers, so people arrive close to empty-handed. For an equipment maker the class is not a place to sell buta place for first contact, and whether the paddle someone picks up there turns into a purchase depends on whether there is anywhere to play next.

One more thing. Pickleball One, which published the playing-population figures, is also the company that runs the outlet where Tsukimura writes his column. In Japanese pickleball, promotion, research, retail and coaching still circulate at close quarters. When reading the numbers, it is worth checking whose position they come from.

The August 30 and September 6 classes, and where to check for the next one

Item

Details

Dates

Sunday, August 30 and Sunday, September 6, 2026

Hours

(1) 14:00-14:50 (grades 1-2 with a parent) / (2) 15:10-16:00 (grades 2-6 with a parent)

Venues

Shibuya Sports Center (1-40-18 Nishihara, Shibuya). The May 18 session was posted on April 8, the November 30 session on October 3, and the July 26 session on June 28. To catch the next one, checking the topics list in early October is the realistic line.

Summary

What this class shows is that Japanese pickleball is still at the stage of borrowing space in ward gymnasiums while top players teach beginners. Once the playing population moves on from 330,000, instructors' hours will get a price first, and the reason for an international competitor to stand in front of a free parent-and-child class will thin out.

What enthusiasts can do is simple: get in once while free slots still exist. If you run a facility, start by watching Shibuya's announcement page regularly and opening your own slot the week after each session.
