They sent out Martin Emmrich and Lina Padegimaite, plus cash. MLP's second trade window opened on March 2 and closed at noon Eastern on July 20. The move landed right on that deadline.

The expectation had been that if the NJ5s landed a top men's player, they would have to give up one of their existing mainstays, Noe Khlif or Will Howells. Instead they kept both and added Staksrud on top. Adding a world-class player without thinning the roster has sent a shock through the league.

Who is Staksrud

Federico Staksrud is 30 and from Buenos Aires, Argentina. He came from tennis, turned pro in 2021, and has reached world No. 1 in singles on the PPA Tour, where he still ranks near the top. He is an all-rounder who plays singles, men's doubles and mixed. In MLP's team format, a player who can carry several events is worth more. Able to enter multiple events, Staksrud fills a team's gaps all at once.

Sorting out what moved in the trade

The trade paired an exchange of players with cash on top. US pickleball media report that MLP allows up to $200,000 in cash per player in a trade (about 31.6 million yen at roughly 158 yen to the dollar). The figure here was not disclosed, but the fact that this much cash can move for a single player is itself evidence of money flowing into the league.

Team

Players acquired and what was given up

New Jersey 5s

F. Pro player Zane Navratil said the rest of the teams in the league are basically fighting for third place, framing the title race as down to the NJ5s and one other side. Orlando's return drew criticism, with commentator Erik Tice saying bluntly that he did not see it as a good deal for Orlando.

比較対象に挙がるのが、当時の優勝候補筆頭セントルイス・ショックだ。ショックはシーズン中盤の大会でNJ5sを撃破しており（The upset that stopped unbeaten New Jersey's women, as Shock hand ALW a first loss）、両者は当時すでに火花を散らしてきた。NJ5sのスタクスルド獲得は、優勝争いの中心にショックと並び立とうとする一手でもある。

The questions Japan's emerging pro sports should be asking

Gather stars on one team and attention jumps.
