JSPO runs the Japan National Sports Festival and is the central body that binds the country's governing bodies together. Taking a place on that list is the destination ofthe process that unified Japan's bodies through the merger of JPA and PJF, and at the same time the moment the sport first set foot on the ground of public sports administration. Read the substance of the approved organization label wrongly, though, and the news can be taken as either too big or too small. Here is what changes and what does not.

What JSPO recognized is who governs the sport in Japan

What JSPO approved is that the federation meets the organizational requirements to govern pickleball in Japan. The federation's release positions it as the national governing body for the sport in Japan and says the approval makes that standing clear within the sports world.

Behind it is the merger of JPA (Japan Pickleball Association) and PJF (Pickleball Japan Federation) completed on April 14, 2026. Unifying the governing bodies at home and being placed inside the official sports administration framework is the starting point for public routes such as the Olympics. In line with that principle, Japan brought its two organizations into one. The JSPO approval can be read as official confirmation that the merged body is the country's sole point of contact.

Approved status is not the goal but a starting line with a five-year clock

What is worth keeping in view here is that JSPO membership comes in tiers. From the top: full member, associate member, and then the approved organization status granted this time. Approved organization is the entry level at the bottom, and it does not run indefinitely.

Under JSPO's membership regulations, approved status lasts until the fifth March 31 after joining, and an organization that cannot move up to associate member in that time loses the status automatically. This approval is an entry ticket with homework attached: get the organization in shape and climb a tier within five years, and it does not settle the federation's standing. The real contest starts here.

Only full membership opens the National Sports Festival, and the Olympics lie further still

Laying the tiers out side by side makes it easier to gauge the distance to what readers care about: can the sport appear at the National Sports Festival, and when might the Olympics come?

JSPO tier

Status at the National Sports Festival

Organizational benchmark

Full member

Can become an official sport

Member organizations in all 47 prefectures are a prerequisite

Associate member

Does not become an official sport

Requires a degree of build-out as a governing body

Approved organization (current status)

Not eligible

Entry level. Promotion to associate member within five years is the condition

In other words, standing on the prefecture-versus-prefecture stage as an official National Sports Festival sport means climbing past associate member all the way to full member, and that rests on spreading the organization across all 47 prefectures. The Olympics sit behind a separate gate again, an international federation in working order and a decision by the IOC, and the federation itself frames it only as a long-term view, saying it is working with eventual Olympic inclusion in mind. Confusing this approval with an Olympic decision misreads the picture.

Approved alongside padel, two emerging racket sports through the same door

That day JSPO accepted padel as an approved organization alongside pickleball. Both grew out of existing tennis and table tennis culture, with facility and equipment businesses spreading ahead of the sport. Comments from the people involved and those around them bring the meaning of the approval into focus.

Federation release - positions the approval as the result of an overall assessment covering grassroots promotion, hosting domestic and international tournaments, developing players, coaches and referees, and strengthening governance

The federation's near-term plan - founding an All-Japan Championship, junior development, strengthening the national team, and support for sending players to international events

The sports administration context - padel has a record of inclusion at the Asian Games and pickleball is hurrying to build out international governance, with emerging sports pushing for official routes at the same time

Two sports passing through the entrance at the same moment also hints that JSPO has begun building a place for emerging disciplines. They were judged not on the speed of their growth alone but on their capacity to govern themselves, which is worth noting for other new sports hoping to follow.

With a governing body settled, promotion, public support and corporate money all move more easily

How does the approval work in practice for players and facility operators in Japan? Three things matter.

First,It opens the door to public support. Sitting inside JSPO's tiers gives government offices and grant programs a basis for deciding which organization to deal with. When a municipality builds public courts or a regional sports association backs a local tournament, a recognized governing body is a precondition for those talks. Approved status is still only the entrance, but being on the public map at all is a tailwind on the ground.

Second,It unifies development and competitive records. While the organizations were split, tournament results, rankings and registration systems were scattered across different bodies, and the basis for selecting a national team tended to be vague. With one governing body, domestic results connect in a single line up to an All-Japan Championship, and selections for international events can be explained with consistent reasoning. Making clear where development money should go is no small thing.

Third,It adds a stamp of legitimacy for corporate money. In Japan, major companies such as Dentsu and Asics have joined the effort to build the sport's infrastructure one after another, and the side putting up the money cares about who governs the sport. A recognized governing body works as a factor in decisions on sponsorship deals and facility investment, making it easier for industry money to reach the foundations of the sport.

The All-Japan Championship and widening the base: the practical work to watch next

Turning approval into substance rests on how far the announced measures take shape. Founding an All-Japan Championship in particular is a symbolic step toward making the domestic structure whole. Once the top event is fixed, the regional tournaments and rankings leading up to it fall into order too.

The other question is how the base is widened. The federation has already beenlowering the barrier to entry by dropping player registration for an international tournament, among other efforts to bring in beginners and unregistered players. Spreading the organization to all 47 prefectures, which full membership requires, will not happen without that kind of groundwork piling up. Whether it can build the top and widen the base at once is what the five-year clock will test.

Key facts on the approval

Item

Details

Date of approval

June 24, 2026 (JSPO fiscal 2026 regular council meeting)

Organization Name

Pickleball Japan Federation (external name Pickleball Japan / PJ)

President

Rika Riordan

Membership tier

JSPO approved organization (the entry tier; promotion to associate member within five years is the condition)

Background leading up to it

JPA and PJF merged on April 14, 2026, unifying the governing structure

Near-term plans

Founding an All-Japan Championship / junior development / strengthening the national team / support for international dispatch

Summary - on the first step, which is exactly why the next one matters

The Pickleball Japan Federation's JSPO approval is the first step onto the staircase of public sports administration for pickleball in Japan. The National Sports Festival and the Olympics are still well above, and the approved organization label carries a condition to climb a tier within five years. Not overstating it, while treating it as real progress, is the fair reading. Three things for players and operators in Japan to follow from here: when the All-Japan Championship actually launches and at what scale; how far prefecture-level member organizations grow toward 47; and how much support from government and companies reaches the ground now that governance is unified. The next step will come into view through the tournaments and organization-building from this summer on. Start with the next report on the All-Japan Championship.

Sources

Pickleball Japan Federation becomes an approved organization of the Japan Sport Association (JSPO) (Pickleball Japan Federation / PR TIMES)

Pickleball Japan Federation becomes a JSPO approved organization (Pickleball One)

Japan Sport Association membership regulations

Japan's pickleball bodies merge as the new Pickleball Japan (PJ) structure gets under way (Pickleball Japan Federation / PR TIMES)

[93
["post-4416","news","type-news","status-publish","hentry","category-news
["GET
