On stage were Hong Kong's Jack Wong, the top men's singles player on the PPA Tour Asia, and 19-year-old American Zane Ford. About two weeks later, in late June, approvals from both major US certifying bodies, USA Pickleball (USAP) and UPA-A, were in place, and full distribution began with the paddle cleared as legal tournament equipment. A brand built in Asia and carried by Asian players has walked straight into a paddle market run by Western names such as JOOLA and Selkirk, and that is not someone else's story for Japan's players and equipment businesses.

Announced in mid-June; both US certifications and full distribution from late June

According to the pickleball outlet pickle.asia, the launch was held on June 12 at the Dinklab flagship store in Kuala Lumpur, drawing more than 20 sponsored players and players from the local community. The venue also hosted a ceremony formally launching the brand's distribution network in Malaysia, which makes clear this was not just a product reveal but also a start-up ceremony for its retail channel.

The timeline is worth getting right. The launch event itself was June 12. After that, the 14mm and 16mm versions of the KVL005 were added to USA Pickleball's approved paddle list by late June, and they also appeared on the approved list of UPA-A, the pro tour's certifying body. So: announced in mid-June, legal for sanctioned play in late June, with approval and distribution only getting underway in these past few weeks. Certification review takes time, so a lag between launch and approval is normal in the equipment business, and the news hook here is the approvals landing.

Who Arronax is — a brand that sells through the view from the final, not through advertising

Arronax is an Asia-based brand making thermoformed carbon paddles, with a sales network in Malaysia and a direct sales site in the United States. The KVL005 stacks four layers of Toray T800 carbon fiber over a foam core, which the maker sums up as "More Power. More Stability. More Control." Foam cores are becoming the mainstream structure in today's high-performance paddles, an area wheredevelopment has continued even as the number of approved paddles has been thinned to 60 percent below its peak. For readers in Japan, T800 is Toray's high-strength carbon fiber, a material also used in aircraft structures. Japanese materials are already inside a paddle from Asia.

The two faces of the launch are worth a look. Jack Wong is a former tennis player who finished the PPA Tour Asia season ranked No. 1 in both men's singles and men's doubles, and took singles gold at the Hong Kong Open on home soil. pickle.asia puts Wong's DUPR rating at 5.917. Zane Ford is a 19-year-old from Pittsburgh; his own site says he reached the top five in US junior tennis, and the brand markets him as a singles player ranked No. 10 on the PPA.

June's PPA Tour Asia stop in Beijing captured it. Both men who reached the men's singles final were Arronax players, making it an in-house match between Wong and Ford. The brand called that a historic result. Instead of buying awareness with ad spend, it put two of its own paddles side by side on Asia's biggest final court. Building the launch around the two players came from the same thinking, and that is the Arronax marketing template.

KVL005 specs, prices and approval dates

Item

Details

Product name

Arronax KVL005 (Wong and Ford signature model)

Structure

Four layers of Toray T800 carbon fiber plus a foam core (thermoformed)

Core thickness

Two thicknesses, 14mm and 16mm

Colors

Five colors: black, light blue, green, blue and purple

Malaysia price

Launch price RM999 (about 35,000 yen); list price RM1,499 (about 52,000 yen)

US price

$249.99 (about 38,700 yen)

USAP approval

14mm version added to the list on June 18, 16mm version on June 25

UPA-A approval

Already on the approved paddle list

Launch event

June 12, Dinklab flagship store, Kuala Lumpur

*Yen figures are rough conversions at the time of writing, at about 35 yen to the ringgit and about 155 yen to the dollar. Look at the pricing. The US price of $249.99 sits at roughly the same level as the flagships of top Western brands. Rather than the old formula in which a product from Asia meant a budget option, Arronax has priced squarely in the premium band. That says a lot about how the brand sees itself.

Reaction at the launch and in overseas reviews

pickle.asia reported in detail on the energy of a launch that gathered more than 20 sponsored players and the local community, and on a program that went as far as formalizing the distribution network

A US paddle review channel posted a test video titled around whether Zane Ford's new signature is any good, putting the paddle under review in the US market right after release

Arronax officially called its two players sweeping the Beijing men's singles final a historic result, making clear that on-court results sit at the core of the brand

Hong Kong media gave heavy coverage to Wong's bid for a triple crown at the home Hong Kong Open, confirming that Asia is producing stars who can sell paddles

What this means for Japan's players and equipment businesses

This move raises three questions for Japan.

First, distribution. Competition paddles available in Japan are mostly imports from Western brands such as JOOLA, Selkirk and HEAD, and prices sit at a level loaded with exchange rates and shipping costs.HEAD, a storied tennis name, pushing far enough to call itself a pickleball companyis one side of it; meanwhile, brands from Asia are geographically close and well placed to enter the Japanese market on both logistics costs and flexibility in distributor terms. Arronax has now staged a distribution launch ceremony in Malaysia, and the question is which country's distributor it pairs with next. For Japan's equipment wholesalers and retailers, it comes down to who gets to the negotiating table first. The permanent shelf space at Xebio Hachiojiis one sign that retail space in Japan is already taking shape, and there is no longer any reason for the choices on those shelves to be Western brands alone.

Second, the player-led model. What Arronax proved is that one route works: Asian players carry an Asian brand and build trust through match results. Japan is producing pros who compete on the international stage, and the faces to hang a signature model on are starting to line up. As noted above, the high-performance carbon at the core of a paddle is a Japanese specialty. The material is made in Japan, yet no Japanese-brand paddle is on the market, and that blank is itself the opening for materials makers and sporting goods manufacturers.

Third, the practical question for players. Dual approval from USAP and UPA-A is becoming a precondition for equipment choices by anyone entering sanctioned events. Even when importing an overseas brand's paddle yourself, getting into the habit of checking the approved lists before you buy avoids the risk of being ruled ineligible on match day.

How the paddle market's balance of power shifts

Until now the paddle market has been a single-country loop: US brands set the standards, US certifying bodies review them, and US retail sells them. The expansion of the PPA Tour Asia, through Tokyo, Beijing, Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur, brings a new exposure machine into that loop. For Asian brands, Asian events are a stage where a paddle proves it exists by being used in a final rather than by buying ads. The Beijing final sweep is the first success story, and the same pattern should be copied by other emerging Asian brands.

At the same time, the total number of approved paddles has fallen sharply from its peak and reviews have tightened. Going after both major US certifications at a moment when the bar has risen, and clearing them, is one kind of verdict on Arronax's manufacturing quality. That a new entrant in an era of shakeout came out of Asia is worth remembering as an indicator of where the market's center of gravity is moving.

Where to buy and how to check

Item

Details

US direct sales

arronaxsport.com (KVL005 at $249.99)

Malaysia sales

arronax.my (launch price RM999)

Checking USAP approval

Search the approved paddle list at equipment.usapickleball.org

Checking UPA-A approval

Search the approved list at upaa.unitedpickleball.com

Buying from Japan

No authorized distributor in Japan has been announced so far, so cross-border e-commerce or personal import is the realistic route (watch shipping and duties)

Takeaway — after "made in Asia, sold in Asia" comes the Japanese market

Sources

pickle.asia: Two of pickleball’s biggest pros just launched a paddle in KL

USA Pickleball approved paddle list

UPA-A: Arronax KVL 005 approval page

Arronax US official site

Arronax Malaysia news (Beijing final and launch event)

Zane Ford official site

South China Morning Post: Jack Wong's bid for a Hong Kong Open triple crown

Pickleball News Asia: PPA Tour Asia season rankings

Arronax Paddle Review: Is Zane Ford’s New Signature Any Good?
